Computer Monitors
 
I am wanting to buy a larger computer monitor for my fiance as a surprise. He is such a great guy and does so much for me that I want to be able to get him something really nice. He is a mechanical engineering student and does a lot of computer drawing with Solid Works. The screen we have now is a 15" and he has to scoot really close to it to be able to see details in his drawings. I am totally lost when it comes to this kind of stuff...can a screen be too big? I'm thinking about maybe a 20-24". Also, the computer is an HP, does it matter what brand the monitor is or do they all work together?:confused: I would really appreciate any and all input! It would probably be easier to just take him to a store but I really want to surprise him!:D

It doesn't matter what brand monitor you choose, they will all work.
I recommend a wide screen monitor. 20" is a pretty good size. I do graphics, and personally, I like the wider screens because I can see more. Sometimes I have several things going on at once, and need to see it all!

My brother is an engineer and he has 2 HUGE monitors, like 28" or something crazy like that. My husband is a programmer and he complains his 20" is too small. :) So, yes, the bigger the better. You can buy any brand - most LCD panels are made by the same 2 or 3 manufacturers and then they stamp different labels on them. I do have to say though, if he is picky about technology it would be best if you let him pick it out. There are little details like inputs and outputs and contrast ratio and typically the return policy on hardware isn't very good (restocking fees, etc.) so you might want to keep that in mind.

Thanks for those sites. I'll be sure to check them out. I assumed that bigger was better, but hey, ya never know, right?:rolleyes::D

I went to Staples this afternoon and played with a touch screen monitor. Man, I wish I could afford one of those for him! :(
