My Sweet Niece I am trying to be a good auntie and help my niece, She is looking into getting a new bird, That's was she asked for xmas. She is 10 years old and a very responsible kid. I spoke to my brother and he is ok with the idea. I need any suggestions as of what type of bird to get her, She likes the lovebirds and also macaws:eek: I believe the macaws are very expensive, correct? |

Macaws are very expensive but a big commitment. what about a parrotlet? They are the smallest of the parrot family. I was going to get my daughter one of those but we decided to wait untill shes a little older |

I had a canary when I was that age and loved it! Unfortunately he would only sing when the vacuum cleaner was running. LOL |
I have raised birds in the past. A McCaw is not a good choice for a child. They can be very distructive and are very strong. A parakeet, lovebird, canary, finch or the smaller parrots are far better choices for your niece. |

Hi, I also have raised birds in the past, right now we have 10 pet birds. I would not recomend a macaw as someone else said they are a big commitment, plus they can be very loud!. Parrotlets are nice little birds, but can become nippy. I would suggest a quaker parrot or a green cheek conure. The quakers can be quite loud at times, (my quaker, Emma, is the only bird I own that has never bit me) the green cheeks are pretty quiet. Quakers are illegal in some states, (crazy laws). Also cockatiels can be very nice pets. It's always best to buy a young handfed bird and they need lots of attention and handling to stay friendly. I agree about the pet shop thing. Whenever I go to the pet shop to get dog food, the birds always look soooo mean. They are pecking at the glass when I walk by too. I wouldnt have any idea how to find a bird breeder though. When I was 8, I had 2 finches for pets. They were great. They make the sweetest little noises too. I also had a parakeet named Scooby growing up too. He was friendly and I was able to handle him. I thought these kinds of birds were easy to take care of. |
I would suggest a hand fed Cockatiel. They are very sweet. Since she is a child i would def. not suggest a Macaw lol They are huge parrots and can break a finger with a bite, i think they are best for adults. Love birds are nice also and so are Parakeets, but imo Parakeets are very fast and nervous and don't bond like a cockatiel would. |
