Rabbits!! I've always wanted a rabbit. I've been doing research for a while now and I've narrowed my breeds down to a Netherland Dwarf or a Holland Lop. Has anyone ever owned one of these rabbits? If yes, can you please share your experience. I will either get one from a breeder for rescue. I prefer to rescue but a lot of rescues don't like the idea of sending a rabbit to a home that has 3 dogs. So my next question is ... How do you think a rabbit will do with 3 dogs? My dogs are extremely gentle and get along with other dogs and cats. They even like my friend's 2 guinea pigs (Tia tries to "clean" them hahaha). I don't think there will be any problems and I would definitely allow them to get use to each other on a very gradual basis -- it's not like I would just toss a bunny into the house without taking all necessary precautions. PLEASE give me any info you can about rabbits, your experience with one and just what life with a rabbit is like in general -- day to day things. I've read a lot but reading about them and talking to people who've actually owned a rabbit are two very different things. :p THANK YOU all in advance! :D |
Make sure you get it spayed or neutered! I had a Netherland Dwarf that wasn't spayed (didn't even know rabbits could be fixed!) and the results weren't pretty! :p I would think if it was a baby it wouldn't mind the dogs. |
I know for a fact that Bailey does not do well around rabbits or rabbits don't do well around him. |
Awww, I looove bunnies! I have had several rabbits in the past, both Holland Lops and Netherland Dwarfes. In my experience the Lops are better tempered, the Netherlands can be a little grumpy! lol But not all of them though, and yes, I'd agree, you should have him/her spayed, which should help with any temperamental issues a bit. Lops tend to be very friendly and docile, they're gorgeous animals. With regard to dogs, well all the bunnies I've ever had have not stood for an nonsence where dogs are concerned! My last Netherland used to wait eagerly at the end of her hutch which was closest to the back door (while she lived outside for a while) where the dogs (two big Wiemaraners!) would come out in the morning so that if they sniffed at her she could nip their noses! lol Fiesty little things! lol I dont suppose there's any reason though why, if introduced early enough, you couldn't teach the two species to live harmoniously. Hope this helps! Let us know when you decide which nad then when you get one, wont you? ;) Jess :heart to |

From your experience, are rabbits hard to take care of? Do they get sick a lot? I know they don't tolerate the heat well, which is fine because I leave the AC on in the summer. Anything else I should be aware of or any pointers and tips you can share with me? :p |
Jessbell -- do you have any pictures of your rabbits? I'd love to see them. :D |
Rrosenberry, I seem to remember that your bunny "problem" involved wild bunnies.....maybe if hers was in a cage. (brings to mind the hillarious line from Stewart Little "we do not eat family members" |

Here is some info... Well, where to begin... I have had mini dwarfs, mini rex, and a holland lop. I LOVE bunnies :) They have their pros and cons however, like anything. Mine loved to chew unfinished wood, plastic, paper, etc. Finished wood has remained untouched. They shed a few times a year which can get pretty crazy, lol. Males can 'spray' you- my mini lop use to run circles around my feet then spray to claim me as his. I heard that getting him fixed could remedy this, so I left him at the vet and he ended up dying :( So that is a risk you take. My mom's dwarf was fixed (female) and she ended up ripping her stitches out so make sure you get a collar for it till it is healed up! They can be a lot of fun and have great personalities. I have 2 rabbits currently and a beagle (plus my yorkie, but they haven't been introduced yet). My rabbits together can be a bit much (they'll fight cuz they are both males). WIth my beagle they just chase eachother around pretty much. I know, rabbits and a beagle, lol. The rabbits are pretty meek and will let dogs sniff them and my daughter touch them. Obviously they can be spooked easier than a dog. My mom's female dwarf gets aggressive when you feed her- watch your fingers! My boys aren't like that. Females tend to be more aggressive and territorial, but males can decide that you are 'theirs for the marking'. I guess it depends on how much you will leave them out as to which would be better. Boys seem to be more amiable and tame to me. Of course watch cords- they will get chewed! If you have other questions please PM me or email me hebrews11_1 at hotmail. I have bought from pet stores and rescued one poor little guy from becoming snake food... Good luck! |
My bunny was mean. Bit me all the time also you have to be careful of all wood, cords and almost eveything else  |
I had a bunny when I was little. I had a mini rex and we got her from a show breeder. She was all white, with light grey ears, and bright red eyes. She was a big bunny though. My cousin got one at the same time and his was a dwarf something or other. His was little and all brown. A funny story... both of my grandfather's and my dad built their cages. The first time we went to see all the rabbits, we were going just to look, and they had only finished one cage and was half way done with the other one. Well we ended up getting two rabbits that night and figured they would be alright together for a night. Now mind you, it was male and female BABIES. They decided to try and put the cage outside of my bedroom window. All night I heard clanging and running and all that. I woke up the next morning... now mind you, I was 7 or 8 at the time. I was complaining that the bunnies kept me up all night and asked what the heck they were doing. My mom quickly answered that they were "playing tag". I accepted that answer for YEARS because I just never actually thought about it. It wasn't until I was about 15 or 16 when I actually thought about it and was like "WAIT A MINUTE!!!" Hershey (the little boy) was chasing my Marshmello to get to her... no she did not end up pregnant. |
