Is a job really supposed to be like this? I'm not sure who is right in this situation, but I sure as heck don't think anyone should be made to feel the way I've been feeing lately at work-- is this normal? I'm 22 and was recently hired at a company. My job responsibilities have drastically increased in the past 2 months and I am now doing a job I have zero experience in. Yes, I make mistakes. I've learned tons but this is such a detail oriented job that I miss a few things here or there (let me say I was not hired to do this particular job but the company is short-staffed so I was promoted far beyond my qualifications) My boss has referred to me as a "dumb sh*t", sat me down on numerous occasions to tell me I'm not doing a good job and constantly belittles me. I admit, I've done some things incorrectly, but once they have been pointed out I make sure not to do them that way. I wasn't adequately trained for this position and certainly not hired to do it initially. I don't think I'm hyper-sensitive, but I've cried on numerous occasions coming home because of the way I've been spoken to. Is this normal? Is this okay in a business? Do people really act this way in "the real world?" |
I'm sorry :(. Sounds awful, esp. the name calling at work. I've never experienced that at work. The belittle part, yes, I have unfortunately and sometimes I think bosses are stressed and power hungry from their bosses and find someone to take it out on, and sometimes that's us. |
It happens, but it is NOT appropriate. Do you have an HR or personnel department/person you can speak with? I would confront him politely and say you are trying hard but you have been asked to do a job that you were not hired for and was not trained for. Say you are happy to do it but you would appreciate some more training. I would also politely say that you do not feel it is appropriate for him to call you a dumb sh--t. |
It's a very very small company- so no HR department. I already know this is not what I want to do with my life. So I'm currently looking for a new job- preschool teacher, full-time nanny, etc.... and then I'm going to get my teaching credential and begin a new chapter of my life. I got my taste of corporate life and I can honestly say I do not like it!!!! I didn't graduate top of my class to be put down everyday and I have so so so so so much to give (personality wise) that I can't stand the thought of being a human computer the rest of my life and not give what I have to give to someone who needs it (children, the education system, a family in need, etc) I'm not one to just work for the money... and I'm not one to be pushed around by a bully! Just makes me so mad that people think they can treat other people that way! |
Thanks for the replies... I didn't get many... Am I over exaggerating? Is that just how it is? Am I complaining too much? It's hard to approach him (or anyone else for that matter) because I'm definitely the youngest person there, by a lot! But after this week, it's definitely taking it's toll. |
I think it's a good idea to look for another job. Obviously one isn't going to love every day of work, but you shouldn't absolutely dread it. Good luck! |
I agree with Kyle, maybe another job, does your boss have a boss that you can talk to it? it sound to me like hostile environment issue there:( I tell you somenthing thought I will never put up with that:mad::thumbdown |
I would really step up looking for another job. You should not have to be called names like that and be so stressed. I hope you can get out of the situation quick. |
you should talk to an attorney! and get out of that situation. I am really sorry that you have to deal withh such terrible behavior. Good Luck to you in finding something more suitable for you..Life is too short to be unhappy with your work. and NO you are not being too sensitive! d |
Thank you for the support! I have this HUGE work ethic so I feel bad leaving after they have come to rely on me for this account BUUUT at the same time if they respected me I wouldn\'t be leaving... Please cross your fingers and pray that I find something quickly! Thank you, everyone!!!!!! <3 |
I was harassed by my boss once. It was a small company and the person who was responsible for personnel was a good friend of the owner. I had no where to turn, other than an attorney and was afraid I would come out on the short end of that one. The boss was Iranian, and you know what Iranian men think of women. I think he felt threatened by me. It was the only job I walked away from. I had my fill. I called in sick on Friday. On Saturday I went in, cleaned out my desk and put my resignation and keys on the boss\'s desk. Sunday morning about 3 am I woke up in a panic, wondering what the heck I had done. By 5:00 pm that Sunday, I had applied for a tax id number and business license and was in business for myself. That was 12 years ago! I still have that business, work at it part time but it is something to fall back on if I ever get in a similar situation. Don\'t hesitate to do what your heart tells you. I hope you are one who is fortunate enough to find a job that feeds your soul as well as your stomach. Many are not so lucky! |
OMG NONE of that is okay! I\'m so sorry you\'re going through this:( And I don\'t think you\'re overreacting at all. NO ONE should be talked to and treated that way, it\'s not professional at all! You\'re doing the best job that you can with what you\'ve been given, and that\'s all anyone can do, ya know? I hope you find something else fast! |
Any boss who would use that language is an idiot. I am sorry, but you are going to have to get out of there. That is a toxic environment. |
I\'m so sorry, that\'s really not okay! Your boss should not be calling you names at all. I don\'t know how it\'s supposed to be but i know no one should be making you feel that way. It should be a job you love and feel comfortable in |
This is totally wrong, no you are not being overly sensitive. A boss doesn\'t have the right to use such phrases to you if he has half a dozen employees or a Fortune 500 company, it\'s still unacceptable. Sorry to say, yes some do act like that in the real world. |
