Gross but turned out kind of neat! I forgot to share this with you guys. this is utterly disgusting but after researching it, kind of neat. my bfs neighbors cat keeps coming into his yard and killing mice and leaving them in the driveway or by a door. Well bf told me something about one of the mice that sickened me... and then I saw it first hand myself the other day. My boys had thier nose to the ground very intensely on sunday and when I went to investigate it was a dead mouse.... so I quickly put them in the house until bf could come get rid of the mouse. Well the mouse started moving as I was watching it. And from underneath it came 3 of these bugs, at first I thought they were bees so I jumped back but then I realized they were not and started watching them. They literally MOVED the mouse about 2 ft per 15 mins. Small little beetles. It was disgustingly fascinating. so I looked it up online and found out what these bugs are. They are called American burying beetles. I won't get into what they do with dead mice since that is repulsive, but I will tell you this.... I ended up emailing the national bird and wildlife dept. These beetles are on their endangered list and have not been reported as being seen in NH ever! I have not heard back from them yet but Im suspecting I will. We did not touch the beetles but we did get rid of the mouse. So its kind of cool in a gross way! I hate bugs... I don't know why I keep stumbling across things like this... (remember my spider post a couple weeks ago??) oh yeah, my pet spider is gone now, for about a week and a half now. Must be too cold for her. |
YUCK!! I thought finding a dead mouse was bad...I dang sure don't wanna see BUGS coming out of one. Btw, if your spider is probably dead. They come for awhile...lay their egg sack and then they die. |
Wow- your title says it all. Gross but kind of neat.:D That is so wild that you have something so rare right there in your yard. |
Wow! That was very smart of you to find out about the bugs and report them! |
How very interesting. I responded to your spider post, and now I think it came to our house. He has a HUGE web just outside out back door. Every time I let my little furbut out to do her business, I see this giant spider. It has been there for about a week now.:) |
wow its cool though the cat is killing the mice for you better outside than in! Very neat about the bettles |
even though its a little gross, its still very cool at the same time, how neat:thumbup: |
Wow, that's pretty cool...in a gross way! That's something you may never see again in your life, though. |
Awww...how nice of the neighbors cats to leave you presents all the time. YUCK! On the bright side, at least they are killing the mice, I suppose. That is very gross, but very neat at the same time. I have never heard of a 'burying beetle' before. |

Wow, I googled them and that is pretty cool what they do. That's my new piece of information for the day... wonder what I will learn tomorrow! |
1 Attachment(s) That is pretty awsome about the bugs. I also had a 'pet' spider this year. She made a huge web from the tree branch all the way to the grass, and even attached it to a bush. Was she trying to catch animals? lol. She is gone now, but it was fun to see her through the glass window. So egg sacs, huh? Does that mean im going to have a bunch of those huge scary spiders? I hope not, ugh. This is all coming from someone who owns a giant african millipede! Here's a pic of Millie. Don't worry, they're vegetarians. :p |

Yes, I agree. GROSS and COOL. How exciting! And I love your love of research. I like looking everything up too. The people at work complain that I google or snopes everything (and spoil some fun for them). |
