The first homecoming celebration dates back to the year 1911. University of Missouri Athletic Director, Chester Brewer, afraid that fans and alumnus would not attend the “big game” due to a change in location, devised a plan to add some excitement to the game. He challenged the alumnus to return home for a great celebration with parades, parties, a rally, and of course the big game.
Over 9,000 fans returned home for the event, which is recorded as the first official homecoming game. The rest is history. Now almost every middle school, high school, and college in the country continues this annual tradition.
Part of the southern tradition is the Homecoming Mum. Only one person can be a homecoming queen, but everyone can wear a mum fit for royalty.
Think of trinkets and charms as jewelry for your mum. As tradition goes, most mums have bells and whistles, and usually a football or two, and maybe a rabbit’s foot for luck.
Charms are usually chosen to represent the wearer. A basketball may be added for a basketball player, a music note for a band student, etc.
Letters and numbers are applied on the ribbons with the wearers name, school year, boy or girlfriend’s name, etc.
White and silver mums are sometimes worn by seniors to set them apart from underclassmen.
Ribbons are also a part of the look. Braided ribbons or beaded garlands of stars, hearts, footballs, bears, or chains are added to personalize your mum.
Warning to all – Don’t mix and match silver and gold trinkets, ribbons or letters and remember, the more the better.

With Morgan, I cant keep up with them. I just call'em "Flavor of the Week" most of the time but didnt think it would be very nice to post that :D .... o0h to be 14 again!!!

We always had mums but not all the ribbons, and fuzzy things hanging down. Love the pics Twalla! Your girls are very pretty!

They did have a good time at the game. I cant remember if they have a dance or not. Its not "cool" to go :D

WOW! We have always had Mums, thats what homecoming is all about. These are small in comparison to what they can be. They can be triple size mums with lights... it can get crazy and EXPENSIVE!

Morgan and Jessica look like two peas in a pod. Very, very interesting thread. Our son and his family live in TX. When they had their baby 2 yrs. ago we were told that it is tradition to put a huge display on the door to the mother's room with floors, toys, ribbons and anything else you can think of. Next time we will know what to do. You have lovely nieces. Joanne

I hear that... ok so I will let you keep the card since you didnt grow up here. Go to your local Michaels or Hobby Lobby - there should be aisles (at least 2-3) dedicated to Mum stuff.

Thanks, Joanne, and you nailed it with the two peas in a pod. They are almost two years apart and over the past two years they have become best friends.

Yes the baby mum is also very popular. I have made a couple of those but its hard to keep those trial size baby products on there. I made one time for a boy and instead of the "mum" I used a cowboy hat and attached ribbons from it. I spelled his name out with blocks. It was cute.

Is it really??? :confused: It must be because I was shocked that some people didn't know what they were :eek: LOL. Hey, those things aren't cheap either!! I remember mine costing a ton.

We use to do big homecoming ribbons (no flowers, etc)...but I don't think they do any of that now....this week is our homecoming week!

Oh gosh dont I know it, they can get crazy expensive! We used to make theirs and its not cheaper to do your own UNLESS you can buy the stuff up on clearance. Then you can usually save some $.
