I went to a pig farm once for a class I was taking. It was a small farm, about 8 acres and they had around 3000 pigs!!!!!!! The stench alone made me want to vomit. They were packed, and I mean PACKED, like sardines into "size" pens.(pigs of certain sizes went into certain pens) I saw no abuse from the work-men(besides being packed in pens), but the men did pull dead pigs out of some of the pens.(probabley from suffocation or trampeling) They also knew that the school class was coming. There were rows of breeding sows with babies. The sows could not move(by metal bars) so that they would not lay on or kill the babies. As soon as the babies were weaned, they were taken to the appropriate "size" pen. The sows were then placed in a nice big pen with a boar to be bred again. I did notice that the men carried big metal sticks(like a big baseball bat) when they were in contact with the pigs. Pigs are very dangerous and smart and can easily kill a human. So I dont blame the workiers for having clubs. This pig farm had everything down to a fine art in order to make the most profit, as most businesses do. You cant blame them for that! But, malicsious abuse to any animal is disgusting and should never be allowed in any business. |

Not all hog farms are like that. I worked on one for 3 years while I was in high school and college, it sucked but it paid very nicely for a student, and the hogs on this farm were treated better than the employees. The only time they were ever hit was at feeding time. We had small whips, like this, that we'd pop them with to keep them from stepping on our feet. I don't know if any of you have ever been stepped on by a large animal, 400lbs+, but it hurts. Not once were they ever popped hard enough to make them squeal, just enough to keep them in check. They were all vaccinated and kept in clean conditions. All of the breeding sows were allowed to free range on 250 of the 1000 acres and had shelters to get out of the rain. The piglets were kept in shelters that had huge fans running in them and water misting in certain areas, they could also go outside and roll around in the mud or whatever but not as freely as the sows. The shelters were washed out every afternoon... whether it was dirty or not. The employees, on the other hand, smelled like death at the end of the day... which was usually 9 p.m. |
068 - That is so good to hear - thanks for posting that. so - was it Hormel or another named farm where you worked ? Cause I'm so never buying made by Hormel again...not that I do now but still..... That was very very disturbing & if one 'farm' is like what they reported - it stands to reason there are more |
:cheer:*** UPDATE ***:cheer: The PETA Files: 22 Charges Filed Based on PETA Investigation at Hormel Supplier It's with a proud and ecstatic heart that I report this news today! Our investigation into an Iowa pig farm that breeds piglets destined for Hormel has resulted in 22—that's right, count them—22 criminal charges. The Greene County Sherriff just announced in a news release that six individuals employed by the farm at the time of PETA's investigation now face a total of 22 counts of livestock neglect and abuse. Those charged include a former farm manager—who we understand still works on another pig factory farm—and a supervisor, as well as two individuals who still punch the clock at the Iowa factory farm as we speak. A whopping 14 of the counts are aggravated misdemeanors—the stiffest possible charges under Iowa state law for crimes committed against farmed animals—carrying up to two years behind bars. To PETA's knowledge, this is unprecedented. Charges based on PETA's undercover investigations are now pending against pig factory farmers in both Iowa—the nation's top pig-raising state—and North Carolina, which occupies the second rung on that dubious list! :cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer: |
Wow, that's great! |
Awesome!! Thank you for the update, Nikki! :D |

What a great update. It is heartening to see that crimes committed against animals actually result in criminal charges. Animal cruelty is NEVER okay. |
