Interesting/ Jack Russel Terrier Club of Am. I watched a very interesting show over the week-end regarding the Jack Russel Terrier. Do you know that the pups are not registered until they reach one year old. Why? This is the best idea I have ever read: To make sure that all litters are healthy and that no health problems arise in them before reaching one year old. This way the breed is safe from defaults in future breeding securing the breed standards in the future. If you look at this breed they have not changed in 100 years. This is why. I think that's amazing. Perhaps if the Yorkshire Terrier did this more than less would be more to the breed standard and puppy mills and BYB would not be able to register their pups. Very interesting I thought. |
I know it took a long time for this breed to be recognized by AKC. Years ago a friend bred them and at that time...breeders had a hard time obtaining a particular standard. They're heights would vary, the coats etc. So he explained...you breed two of what you were seeking and then more or less hoped for the best. I think Jack Russels are known as Parson's terriers by AKC... |
That is interesting |
Yes, it's very interesting. Parson's Russells are AKC. The ones that call themselves Jack Russells are not AKC and do not want to be considered the same as Parson's. They are trying to keep Jack's as working dogs and don't feel AKC recognition will help in that regard. Or at least it's something close to that. They're so cute! |
That is very cool! I am always interested in the Jack Russell breed because my little Emma is 1/2 yorkie, 1/2 JRT and she has such a funny little personality :-p. |
 I guess because this thread was not about Yorkies it was ignored. Thought it would bring a good discussion but I guess not! |
Just seen this...I think that is an awesome idea. I wonder if they have to supply a health record in order to become registered. Think of how it would improve the yorkie breed. I think this is a great idea. I wonder why they only do it for Jack Russels why not all breeds. |

I believe most Yorkie breeder's and owner's do prefer AKC for their registry especially if their breeding dogs are registered to it. Stop and think how many puppies are diagnosed with one ailment or another before one year old. You read so many just here on YT. If one breed has wonderful results from this way of registering and "almost" guaranteeing a healthy pup then other's should follow this as well. The purpose of registering this way is to better the breed and help as much as possible to keep it healthy and closer to breed standards. |
