Sewing and Embroidery Machines - Opinions Needed
 
I currently sew on a Singer machine from like the 1800's :sewmachin. Okay, not that old but close enough. So, I'm searching for a good, reliable sewing and embroidery machine in one. I've seen a few Singer and Brother ones that I'm interested in but want some input before I go ahead and just get one. I know with some you are able to access it with your computer, does that mean that you can use whatever you want/can find to embroider or is it still limited? If it isn't like that, how much does it usually run to have other images to embroider?

I hope I'm making sense.

Also, what are some other good machines besides Singer and Brother? Are there any? It's just sooo overwhelming searching for a new one.

What do you use? :rolleyes:

I'd like to keep the price reasonable as I know that they can get up there price-wise. I don't mind if it's not TOP OF THE LINE, SEW BY ITSELF type of stuff - after all, I'm coming from a sewing machine that messes up quite a bit and just sews and that's all.

I love Brother machines, I have a fairly expensive one but it has never had to be fixed and I've had it since 1994. I wouldn't buy one from Walmart or Target though because those ones usually have plastic gears and can't be fixed. I would find a place that just sells sewing machines and get a good all around machine with metal gears, it will last you years longer and can be fixed or adjusted, if needed! I would stay away from the newer brother embroidery machines. I purchased one for $400 and it was a piece of poo. The cassettes they use always get stuck and you spend more time trying to fix it.
I agree you should go to a store that specializes in sewing.

I went to a store nearby run by an older lady and all of her stuff was outrageously priced. There's another one in another town that we're going to go to today and I'll have to see how much they are. If not, I'll probably order one online, not sure yet though. :confused::rolleyes:

I have a Pfaff Expression 2036. It has 26 different utility stitches, eg, elastic stitch, blind hem stitch, basting stitch, hem stitching, etc. I bought it a year before I retired and left it in the box until then, so I'm just now getting acquainted with my "new" machine and loving it. The store where I bought it offers sewing classes and a free one on one session with me to learn my machine. Might be something to keep in mind when making your decision, as having a resource like that is invaluable.

I already know quite a bit about sewing from the many classes I took when I was a little bit younger, that's a great deal though! I'm going to order a Singer Futura off the internet. It's the best deal I could find on one and you're not limited to certain embroideries, with the others you have to buy the separate discs that are like $100 - $200 a piece. :p

I researched on the different ones for several hours last night :rolleyes:, I hate impulse buys.

Brother Machines
 
I have a newer brother embroidery/sewing machine. I did not want to spend a whole lot, cuz I tend to lose interest after going gung ho for a while (my husband gets annoyed, lol) Anyway, I think I spent like $300 and it has the cartridges for the threads that just pop in and thread themselves (big help for those of us blind as a bat). I have used it a lot more than I thought I would. I bought the PED extension (antoher $100) to be able to download things from the internet. It really is quite easy. Other programs that I have bought for it run about $50 to $90. The Disney cartridges are the more expensive ones. I did however just buy one that are cute little yorkies on Ebay and they only charged $19.99. You just need to watch that the format is the correct one. So I guess I would say, if you are buying it for fun or not heavy duty constant sewing, I love the brother machine. If you are a professional that is constantly sewing, I would probably spend the money for better equipment. I wasn't ready to invest thousands. Hope this helps!

Make sure you read reviews online first. I was looking at that machine and if I remember correctly I think some of the reviews people said it was a difficult machine to learn to use (I may be wrong, it may have been a different machine I was looking at the time). I have the brother Innovis and I like it although I am limited to the size embroidery hoop I can use. I can only do small designs but it works for me considering all I do is dog clothes. I can also download all sorts of designs from the computer which I love! The possiblilites are endless

That's all I've done is read reviews and all I basically see is the same thing you see whenever you buy something. There are people who love it and people who hate it. In order to download all sorts of designs from the computer, what do you have to have? With the Brother machines all I've seen are the discs that cost $100 to $200 which is ridiculous. If you'd like you could just PM me, it doesn't matter.

That's true, there is always people who post both good and bad reviews. I tend to be impatient when it comes to trying to learn something new so thats why I was hesitant on getting a machine that several said might be hard to learn. Im just not patient. When my regular sewing machine finally broke I needed a new machine pronto so I went ahead and went to my local sewing machine store and told the sales lady all the stuff I needed the machine to do but told her I couldnt spend thousands of dollars so she talked me into the brother Innovis 900d. It is RIDICULOUSLy easy to use!! Its funny because I got free classes but I really didnt need the classes at all. The machine is so self explainatory which is great for someone like me. My machine came ready to download from the computer. All I have to do is plug in a USB cord (it came with my machine) from the computer to my machine and then I just download the embroidery design file and it sends it right to my machine! I love it!

I asked about that in my classes and unfortunately no I cant. Well I can but I have to purchase a seperate program in order to do that and its really expensive, like $1500

Ouch!! That's really expensive!! I believe the Singer machine you can do that, but you pay about that much for the program and the machine together. I was hoping the Innovis could, too. So you are limited to designs included and the ones you download that others have made then?

Well you can find just about any design possible on internet so it didnt bother me really. That only complaint I have with the machine is that it only uses a 5X7 hoop so I cant do any designs bigger than that. Which for dog clothign I dont need to but if I want to make stuff for Tess I really wish I had that option now. And supposedly I can do some small scale design work on my machine (I have yet to figure this out) but no I cant scan a picture or digitize any of my current files, it requires the expensive software for that.

I have a Janome 9000 that I have had for about 13 years now. If I am able to ever upgrade I would probably upgrade to the Janome 11000. It connects to the Internet and I would like to have that feature.

I owned a Bernina embroidery machine also, but did not like it as much as my Janome.

I have the quantum futura machine myself, i love it. The newer models come with the vista patch already in it but when i got mine it wasn't out yet. I had it for about a year before my laptop died on me and i got a new one that had vista and then it took a while to get the patch but now it works great. You can get all kinds of discs for it, i go on ebay to get a lot for about $10-$20 each. And you can even design your own designs to use with the right programs. Mine came with it. Before i got the futura my hubby bought me a husquarvarna for over $2,000 but the discs each cost over $200 so i really like the singer better.

I have the Singer Quantum XL-6000. I absolutely love it. With the software I can do just about anything I would ever need to do.

I made up my mind, I'm getting one of the Singer Futura's. I'm ordering it off a website where I can put it on Layaway, that way it doesn't put a damper on our budget. The website I found is ran by a lady who helps all her customers and has positive customer reviews out the roof.

For that, just look for the "auto-digitizing" software to be included. I've seen several that have it.
