Teacups! Is there such a thing as a teacup Poodle? I've read different things from different sources. This is the only breed that I know has been referred to as teacups before the whole "craze" with Yorkies and Malteste, Chihuahuas, etc so I am confused. OMG i feel like nails on a chalkboard saying the word so much. Any insight appreciated! |
Funny you mention this.. I was just thinking this the other day,,, My aunt always had " teacup" poodles,, and I was wondering if there really is a difference or it the same hype as it is today w/the Yorkies?? Curious to get an answer. |
As far as I know 'teacup' poodles is just a term they use to describe the dog. Same thing as the 'teacup' yorkies out there now :rolleyes: The poodles I know of are standard; mini & toy size... This is what I got from the AKC website: Size, Proportion, Substance Size The Standard Poodle is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders. Any Poodle which is 15 inches or less in height shall be disqualified from competition as a Standard Poodle. The Miniature Poodle is 15 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders, with a minimum height in excess of 10 inches. Any Poodle which is over 15 inches or is 10 inches or less at the highest point of the shoulders shall be disqualified from competition as a Miniature Poodle. The Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders. Any Poodle which is more than 10 inches at the highest point of the shoulders shall be disqualified from competition as a Toy Poodle. |
hhhmmm.... I've never heard of people referring to them as "teacup" poodles, I've only heard "toy" poodles. But I wouldnt be surprised if there are people out there using the term "teacup" to sell them at a higher price or whatever. |
OMG It annoys the crapola outta me when I hear "TEACUP" (followed by a dog breed) One of the ads in our local paper this morning said TEACUP SHIH TSU...Next thing will be TEACUP Mastiffs!! GRRR!! |
This is what I just found on the Poodle Club of America (the AKC's parent club for poodles) There is no officially recognized Poodle variety such as a “Royal” Standard, a “Tea Cup“ Toy or a “Tiny Toy” Poodle. These are all just marketing terminologies to facilitate the sale of animals that are in reality just dramatically over or under in size from the norm. |
i was in teh petstore one day adn a lady asked one of teh clerks if they carry teacup LABS...... ( :confused: ) i was sort of chuckeling and the poor clerk looked so confused |

Ok, well I was asking because I've heard this term for YEARS. I'm talking like 10 years. I have always believed there were really teacup Poodles and that the term just was falsely carried over to other breeds (like Shih Tzus, etc). This dog I was looking at is very cute and was not advertised as a "teacup". He is a termed as a toy poodle. Just curious. |

It is very frustrating when you run into people trying to capitalize on the latest trend rather then for the best interest of the dog. Some of the things people say are amazing! I was at a pet store a couple of weeks ago and the owner of the store told me he had a customer come in a few days prior with a 12 lbs. Yorkie and told him that her dog was a "teacup". He said he had to break the news to her, 1. there was no such thing as a teacup Yorkie and 2. not only was her dog not a "teacup" but its size was above the average size according to AKC. She was not a happy camper after that needless to say! |

I was in Petco yesterday w/ Macy (I weighed her yesterday and she's 2.3lbs) and people were running up to us wanting to pet/hold her. I told them no and just kept going about my business. This girl was like "oh is she a teacup?" and I said "no, she's a dog" and this girls like "well, i want a teacup". :mad: |

I have a Yorkie and a toy poodle, and I'm in love with them! Their temperaments are incredible, and they get along so well. I would recommend both breeds to anyone--my next dog is probably going to be a standard poodle. :) |
