80s BBQ Next Saturday I am going to a bbq where we must dress 80s. Here is what I am thinking..... Khaki Skirt (possible shorts if cant find skirt) Layered Polo's (pink and yellow is what I was thinking) -- pop the collar FOR SURE Layered socks (yellow and pink) with penny loafers or white keds I was going to crimp my hair if my nieces still had their crimping iron or I just might curl it with a bow Add some bangles and big hoop earrings..... Going to wear blue eyeshadow and pink lip gloss. Any other ideas or am I missing something for the 80's prep look? |
Don't know about the "prep" look but penny loafers are a sure sign of the 80s! I remember at the high school I worked at, we had an 80s day. I had a to-the-knee blue jean skirt that I splashed bleach all over and then fringed the edges. Black tights that I cut little holes in. Crimped my hair...looked REALLY big. Hooped earrings and bangle braclets. Took an oversized sweat shirt, cut off the sleeves and took out the neckline. Wore a tank under that and had it half hanging off my shoulders. Oh, don't forget, they also wore scrunched down socks with their heals! ...or was that the early 90s? |
What about hair scrunchies? You should get a copy of The Wedding Singer. I think that has some great 80's looks. :) |

1 Attachment(s) I have polos in these colors..... whatcha think about these? |
There were several different looks in the 80's one was the preppy look, and another was the look of Jennifer Beals in Flashdance with the torn off the shoulder sweatshirts, and big hair. It sounds like you are combining two styles together and they were polar opposites. No preppy wore hoop earrings, or blue shadow, makeup was understated, and hair was simple. Of course, since it's a party you can do whatever you wanted. |
I think if you wear a Polo it's required that it has the little IZOD alligator on it...and...it's definitely required that your penny loafers have brand new, shiny pennies in them! ;) Our son used to wear straight legged Calvin Klien jeans with the layered IZOD polos (collar up of course) and penny loafers or Boat (deck) shoes. I remember wearing baby doll socks (the lacey ones) with high heeled sandals...stretch pants that were 3/4 length and the big T-shirts over them...Ked's white tennis shoes or slip on flats went with them...oh, and lots of hairspray for the big hair and scrunchies for the big pony tails! And...no matter what anyone says...there was some darned good music that came out of the 80's! Have fun at your BBQ! |
That sounds really fun!!!! |
If your going preppie, maybe a sweater over your shoulders. Was that the 80's? |
OMG, do you remember The Preppy Handbook? So embarassing. You could do a headband, totally simple hair (think the straight girl in St. Elmos Fire), curled under. LOVE the sweater over the shoulders idea, pink of course. Oxford button downs were huge too. If you did later 80s - in came the GINORMOUS aqua-net hair and bangs - long shirts with leggings, black O-ring bracelets, horrid jewelry, ankle boots - and ALL the pics that we can NEVER live down. Oh, gawd. |
Oh my gosh I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! What a fun idea!! Show us pics- pretty please??? |
