America's New War Zone Teachers, staff go to school packing: A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported. Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun toting teachers follow certain requirements. In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls. |
Corporal punishment is long gone from the schools and it has been replaced with the need for armed teachers? School resource officers? Metal detectors? I liked it better when the kids were spanked instead of shot. Do we, as a nation, possess the intellectual honesty to admit that we have made, and continue to make bad decisions in the direction we are taking our education system? |
Good grief!!! There are other ways of making a school safe than carrying guns, IMO. Joanne |

Yes, that is a good point you make. Shoot 'em but don't spank 'em. It's getting to be very looney and seems like just a bad dream a parent might have. |
I am all for the spanking but if I was a full time teacher in one of those schools I would want to be packing a gun with me too. My future hubby always does even out in public just in case the need arises. Really sad but true. |
:eek::eek::eek: oh my GOSH!! ARMED!? That's insane!! I can't imagine having a teacher that I know has a gun in their desk. Can you imagine...all the crazy teachers out there...who could use some kind of excuse..."They tried to attack me, it was self defense." and all the crazy kids who could most certainly steal them and wreak havoc. BIG BIG BIG mistake. They should have security and police officers who carry guns...not teachers. |

It's so ridiculous, I hate so much about this country every day. I really don't want to bring any kids into this world, I feel for anyone who already has or is going to. I think it's way too much for kids to deal with when they get older - prices of everything, how hateful the world is and will be, everything will most likely be 10x worse in a few years than it is now and that is VERY scary! |

I think school choice and competition between schools for each student is the answer. I'm not trying to offend teachers...I love you guys and I know you're doing your best. But if I had a voucher that would allow me to take my boy to a school where he is safe, unless he crosses a teacher, I would use it. If the government schools had to compete with schools that could discipline, maybe discipline would be brought back to the government schools out of sheer competitive necessity. I don't care why it's brought back...as long as it's brought back. |
I dont know if arming teachers is the answer to school shootings. I would be afraid of accidental shootings. It might make someone think twice though before they go in shooting though |
I dont agree with teacher being armed. I do think that they should have more safety officers on campus esp in the high incident schools. HOWEVER, I think all teachers should go thru crisis mgt training in case a riot broke out or a student got out of control. Its sad that the kids of America choose or are forced to live as adults and and will never know what childhood is all about. |

If the police could be any car, motorcycle, RV, etc. it would be much more difficult to decide when it is safe to break the law. |

Oh and on the guns being in schools.....My future hubby says this..... "School Zones are gun free zones, well the only ones that listen to the laws are the law abidding citizens. So arm them it makes more sense." He is so right. |
