Bearded Dragons! Is there anyone here at YT that has owned or currently owns a Bearded Dragon? Can you tell my anything about them. Are they hard to take care of? My son who will be turning 6 in August has been asking for one and I am not sure what we would be getting ourselves into if we got one. Any info would be greatly appreciated since we know nothing about them! Thanks a bunch Amie |

4 Attachment(s) Hi Amie, We have a female Beardie... she's been a great friend to my 11 year old son!! We're lucky, in that when we got her, she had already been very well socialized as a baby and loved to be handled! Some of them can have pretty nasty temperaments and don't like being touched at all.... I would suggest a very well socialized dragon... 8 months or older.... to start with a young child.... this, vs. a young baby (like you'd get at PetSmart for example) will give you a more successful start, (especially if you'd never had dragons before) since keeping those little ones alive can be difficult.... the habitat and diet need to be PERFECT when they're tiny - - and I've been told that it can be very tough with them. Our Beardie is really easy to care for... we have her in a 60 gallon aquarium with a managerie of the required lights, accessories, heat rocks, water trough, thermometers, misting tubes, etc. She is very content in her environment as Bearded Dragons as a rule, are "loners" and don't care to socialize with others - even their own kind... They do, however (well most) thrive on human contact and our girl just loves watching everything we do.... rides on our shoulders... walks on a leash, etc. She's very sweet. The biggest thing to remember with dragons is that they carry Salmonella so hand-washing rituals after caring for, cleaning or handling your dragon is essential. Thank you Mom2BabyNatalie for all of that info. I am not a big fan of reptiles so this is a HUGE thing for me to do. I realize that kids are only little once and my parents were great about letting us get the little creatures we wanted as children. Thankfully I only longed for things w/4 legs and fur. :rolleyes: I was first thinking about a Gecko Lizard but he is just amazed w/the Bearded Dragon. The ones we saw at the petstore were small and I am clueless at this field!!! Thanks again! |

Well, my son got one two years ago. I was a little hesitant at first. We had done the hampster thing and the gerbils and I didn't want anything else, especially something reptillion!! BUT....this has turned out to be the BEST pet. There is no smell and easy to clean. It doesn't bite. Loves to be held, cocks his head like he's listening when you talk to him. We all think he's great. My son has a harness and takes him outside for walks! Like someone else said, I would get an older one (ours was). We got one from the pet store and within 24 the bigger one ate it! (Not knowing we shouldn't have had them together) So, as one mom to another, I would really recommend one. The initial set-up might be a little pricey, but it will be worth it, although I saw Beardie complete set ups at Petsmart. |
