Nazis Invaded US!!! Forgotten History THE INVADERS: Eight Nazi terrorists. THE DATES: June 13 and June 17, 1942 BACKGROUND: In early 1942, German U-boats were a menacing presence in the waters off the East Coast. Fearing a secret Nazi invasion, the U.S. ordered the approaches to harbors in New York, Boston, and Portland, Maine to be mined. U.S. authorities had no inkling, however, that the invasion being planned by Nazi strategists involved only eight men -- specially trained terrorists with instructions to bomb selected factories and bridges and shake the confidence of the American public. THE INVASION: On the night of June 13, four Nazi agents rowed a collapsible boat from a German U-boat to a beach in Amagansett, Long Island. Fortunately for the U.S., John C. Cullen, a 21 year -old second class seaman in the Coast Guard, stumbled onto the four Germans while patrolling the beach. The nervous Nazis claimed to be shipwrecked fisherman. Cullen was suspicious, particularly when the group's leader, Johann Dasch, tried to bribe Cullen with $300 to shut up. Cullen took the money and rushed back to Coast Guard headquarters to tell his superiors. The FBI instantly rushed in and found a cache of weapons and explosives that the Germans had buried on the beach. Four days later, another Nazi foursome landed without detection on the beach of Ponte Vedra, Florida. AFTERMATH: Dasch, leader of the Nazi mission, was unnerved by his run-in with Cullen. The Nazi spy convinced his partner E.P. Burger to abandon their intricately conceived plan. The duo traveled to Washington, D.C., and turned themselves in to the FBI. Thanks to Dasch's information, FBI officials tracked down the other six Nazis before they could carry out their mission. Dasch and Berger were sentenced to jail (Truman later commuted their sentences and sent them back to Germany, where Dash wrote a book about the mission). The other six were executed within a month of their capture, before the public was informed. - Uncle John's Third Bathroom Reader, 1990 |
