Being a shelter volunteer I have what might be a stupid question but since I don't know I'll ask. :) I'm thinking of volunteering at our local shelter but what are the chances/odds of bringing home something that will make my dogs sick? |
It depends on what you are doing and how clean the shelter is. I work at a shelter. I wash my hands a lot, between each animal I touch. I do not bring my shoes in my house and I change my clothes either at work or right when I get home. I don't let my dogs amd cats near me until I change and wash my hands again. As long as you take precautions you should be okay. I worry about parvo, coccidia, distemper, worms, fleas, etc. We have volunteers and they have never taken anything home. Nor have we. Shelters really appreciate all the help we can get. The animals benefit from people like you. Thanks! |
I volunteer @ my local Humane League. I think it's really great that your thinking of volunteering. :) I have not heard or had anything happen like that to me or any other volunteer that I know of. I like Catholic said, take my shoes off in the garage before I come into the house. I also change my clothes and take a shower almost right away when I get home. I really love volunteering there.:) It makes me feel so good to know I'm doing something little to help. The shelter workers always are grateful for volunteers and any help they can give. |
I'm really worried about becoming attached and trying to save them all. :) |
