I didn't know about the tomato/salmonella problem Until yesterday. I was in the market and the tomato bins were all empty. I chalked it up to someone forgetting to order them. NOT!! Now even MacDonalds has stopped serving them. Our foods being contaminated is a scary thing to me. |
I heard it was only in TX and NM! Didn't know it stretched all the way to CA! I work at an outback and we haven't had any for about 5 days, and don't know when we will have them again! |
It's here in Georgia, too. What's going on? |

No one has died from the recent outbreak, though at least 23 people have been hospitalized. The majority of the infections have occurred in New Mexico and Texas, but cases also have been reported in Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. I guess CA is being careful. Lord knows, we have had our share. I think it is because they haven't been able to identify the origin yet. |
I thought it was only in NJ! I was so sad yesterday haha. I went to subway for dinner. I've been getting the same type of subs for...ever (tuna, lettuce, tomato, american cheese, oil and vinegar) and I saw the sign that said they weren't serving them cause of salmonella - my sandwich tasted WEIRD but better safe than sorry. I'm glad that restaraunts are taking the necessary precautions and not just ignoring the problem. My brother works for Wendy's and he said that a few days ago they had to throw out 27 cases of tomatoes! |
It is really scary how so many foods have had problems. I can't wait until I can have my full garden next year so I can learn to can what I have grown. Not only will it be organic but a whole lot less expensive! |

I just ate tomatoes on my McDonalds salad today from Michigan. I hope I'm safe :confused::confused: |
I think it's only certain types. |

Bigger rounds and Romas. Me....I'll just pass. I don't think they always know what they think they know. Tomatoes are one of my favorite foods. Tomato sandwiches are the best. Cracked wheat bread, mayo and vine ripened tpmatoes and, of course, a little salt and pepper. Yummmmmmm. |

This is a bit better of an explanation of the types that I mentioned in a previous post: The outbreak was linked to eating certain raw red plum, red Roma and red round tomatoes, and products containing these tomatoes. Several major restaurant and grocery chains have stopped selling those varieties. BUT....I don't knowingly buy tomatoes from Mexico because of their fertilizing practices. They say they don't know if it originated in Mexico: A spokesman for the Sinaloa state Tomato Growers Association says exports from Mexico have been halted as a precaution. So far there is no evidence that the salmonella originated in Mexico, which accounts for about one-third of winter tomatoes in the United States. And Breny, if you don't have any of these symptoms, you are fine: Salmonella bacteria are frequently responsible for food-borne illnesses. Symptoms generally appear within 12 to 72 hours after eating infected food and include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. |
