Help...should I buy this house Hi all.... I am currently in a dilemma. Have been shopping for a house for a while...esp during the overpriced housing bubble. Finally things are easing price wise from the over inflated prices of a year ago or so. I have found a house in a pretty good price range but the bedrooms are kinda small. One bed room is 12x12...mmm ok. The next one is 9x9 and the third is 9x8....mmmmm kinda small good for a crib. The exterior is ok brick an stucco..ok size lot. But needs some tlc...kitchen cabinets etc. I really want a yard for the 4 legged kiddies (we live in an apt now, but don't want to be foolish). I am just not in love with the house but am in love with the idea of home ownership. So do I have any opinions out there...I filled out a contract but told my realtor to hold it till I call him and tell him to present the offer:eek: Help:confused: Tina |
Since you're not in love with the house, I would wait and shop some more. I'm nervous you'll regret the purchase after being there for awhile. I know houses over here are going up for sale like crazy. Look around some more, your house is out there some where :) |
I've been looking for over a year and haven't found the one I'm in love with (within price range that is. I say find the one you love! |
I would wait until you find the right one. It's the biggest investment of your life. Unless it is a great price and in a few years you wouldn't mind selling and getting something you love. |
If your not in love with it, don't buy it! A house is a huge purchase (obviously), probably one of the most, if not the most important investment you'll ever make. This place will be your home, you want to love your home and feel comfortable in your home, and have pride in it. If your not feeling it, do not buy it! If your having trouble finding a home you love in your price range, I would try foreclosures. |
I agree with the others. This is too huge an investment not to absolutely LOVE the house. I believe you will feel it when it's the right one. I did with both houses i've purchased. Good Luck to you! |
house Save more money and keep looking...prices are dropping and it is a buyers market..and will stay that way for some time to come..so get what you want... |
I agree! It is a buyers market and you get to be in control! Definitely go with your gut feeling! |
I agree, don't buy something you don't love. If you love it, the inevitable faults aren't as hard to live with. |
I also agree that prices are dropping. I live in a small town where there's lots of houses for sale. Owners are starting to get desperate to sell. Good luck. |
Good answers from everyone. Another reason to wait would be that if you do NOT love it, buy it anyway and later decide you want to sell...maybe others won't love it either... and you will be stuck with it for who knows how long. |
it's a buyers market. wait until you find something you love. are you looking in nj? |
As a Realtor, I agree. Keep your agent on his/her toes....he/she should be pounding the payment to try and find you the house that is PERFECT for you not just one that you should settle for. It's out there....I'd wait. It is such a huge investment and those bedrooms are on the small side. JMO |
Prices are going to continue dropping this year, so I would just hold out and keep looking. When the right home comes along you will definitely know it! Since buying a home is the single most important and expensive investment you should only buy one that you are totally in love with. Remember, if you move into a home you are not all that crazy about, you will only be unhappy. You could also check out lots for sale and see how much building one that you like would cost. Building a home is generally half as much as buying an existing one. |
Oh no, do not buy a house your not in love with!!! I or I should say we did. My DH loved it from the first time we looked at it 4 mos before we put an offer on it. I did not want to live here, but agreed because he wanted it so bad. He kept saying location, location location!!! Ya whatever, the location is out in the country across from some state wildlife land, which means it will never be developed. I regret the decision to buy our house on a daily basis. As we are now a family of 5 in a stinkin 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, no garage, laundry in bathroom house!!!! When we bought it I was preggo w/ our 2nd child so it might have worked out. But a year later when my 3rd was born it hit him that hey, this IS NOT the house for us!! Sorry to go into our problems, lol! But my point is if you don't have that certain feeling for the house, then it's probably not the right place to call home ;) Buying a home is a lifelong or at leat in our case a 30yr investment. Which when your only 24 when you go into that 30yr mortgage it will feel like a lifetime, lol! I'm sure there is the perfect place to hang your hat out there, and when you find it you will know in your heart :) |
I say wait and find the one you love with everything in it you want, like larger bedrooms, a back yard, etc. Do you watch hgtv? |
Hi guys.... Thanks for all the good advise and sharing on your experiences. I guess if the price was lower I could expand but I think the price is too high to get much out of the renovation taking into consideration of having to live through that. I am looking in NJ....I have been for a while. I was going to look in Fla. but I broke my arm "again" end of March so those plans are put off...now with prices finally falling in NJ I might not bother at all with FLa. When I saw this house at first it looked like there was nothing I had to do to it except put on a deck...but taking a second look I see there is work to be done...like the kitchen cabinets. So unless I see it as a worth while renovation job....it's no deal. It's 2am and I have just woke up about 1/2 hr ago. I have been recouperating for the past 2months and have an interview tomorrow and another later this week. My sleep pattern is so off. I am now drinking coffee, lol. Maybe once I get back to work I'll dream a little higher. I am looking in an area where you don't get much for your money but I just love the area. Doesn't make things too easy but in a declining market I just might get lucky. Once again thanks for all the help. Tina |
Sounds like you're definitely not convinced about this property... The space seems too small, but only you know your needs... What may seem small to me, may be just right for you... How the market is now-a-days, you really need to analyze your options prior to purchasing... Good Luck! I Love Florida! |
If you are not in love, dont buy it! It will end up feeling more of a burden than a pleasure and probably turn you off to home ownership! You gotta love your house, even if it needs TLC, if you love it overall than the TLC needed will be worth it to you. |
I agree with everyone that said to wait until you find the house that you LOVE! Look at homes that are a little above your price range, owners are getting desperate to sell and may accept a lower offer;) If you ever get to look here in Florida, you would find so many houses! There are so many here that have been on the market for a long time, and the prices are dropping steadily.. Good luck, and hang in there. |
Keep looking! When we were looking at houses 2 years ago, we almost settled for a house I did not like. Our realtor keep showing us houses that were only 3 bedrooms and I wanted at least 5. I was about to give up when my sister who was also looking at houses switched realtors and called to tell me to check her New realtor out. I gave her a call and gave her a list of what I was looking for and a day later she was taking us to see 3 houses. The first one was the house we ended up getting, after walking into it I started to compare all the other houses we would see with to MY house, I was in love with it even though it needed a Kitchen redo;) If you do not love the house I would just keep looking, you will know what house is "IT" Good luck |
That's what I have heard people say in the past..."buy a house you LOVE". At least I knew enough that I just DIDN"T love this house...in the past I was just very confused with what they were asking and what I was feeling. Things are changing.....thankfully. I am sure as you all have said that when I find a house I love (and I have truned away quite a few) it won't matter that there neeeds some updating or reno work...it will get done nad I will love seeing it happen. Thanks for all your support and advise....OH GOD I WANT TO DECORATE!!;) Tina |
