Redecorating help needed please! 4 Attachment(s) My house is decorated southwestern. Not boots and wagon wheels or rustic or western but light and soft colors! Well I have decided that it is time to redecorate. I love my southwestern but want a change. In an ideal world I would just take EVERYTHING down and start from scratch but in a realistic world (when redecorating is not cheap) that is not possible. I will have to do slowly over the next year. What other type of decor can I start replacing it w/that will have some sort of flow and not look like a complete missed matched mess? I will tell you that I am not a fan of contemperary or very modern. I do like the french country look or the country look of the reds and greens and yellowish gold hints. I am not pig and cow fan, not that type of country. I do like the Italian Villa or spanish inspired look! I feel like I am at a loss and this is usually my strong point, I have helped many of my friends decorate their own home but for some reason I am having such a hard time w/my own! I will attach some photo's so you can see what I am dealing with! Thanks to anyone willing to try and help me out!!!! You have some very nice architectural details and furniture. They are pretty classic, so I think you can go any direction you want. I would just start a room at a time with new paint and replacing all the southwest accessories with French country or whatever theme you decide to go with. Or if you want better flow while you are in the process start with painting every room first, painting over the wall murals, etc. Then slowly start replacing the accessories. You will already have the ones off the walls that you paint. Start by taking out the ones that are obviously southwestern in feel, but leave the more neutral southwestern until you can replace it with what you want. Did you do all the painting yourself? You are very talented. |
Wow..very nice....I used to live in Albuquerque, New Mexico...and it sure reminds me of there!! You can search decorating books at the library and online for new ideas...good luck...keep us updated on the changes! |

You can imagine the look of shock on my face when I came home to it. Hubby was home and thought I would love it as a surprise so he did not tell me when she called and asked if she could come! |
Wow... im not going to be any help! I think your house is BEAUTIFUL and sooo FUN! I'd love to come home to that. The only thing Id redo is the murals in the hallway or something, those cactuses, they look busy and a bit too unrealistic... Id paint over them and put a real cactus there in a big clay pot maybe??? Other than that... I LOVE IT ALL very much! So colorful and unique and fun!! :) |
its easy to redecorate buy removing all accessories from all rooms so you have a clear pallet....then consider what direction you want to go....your construction detail is very classic, your leather sofas are considered more contemporary, your window covering are more traditional, tables are mixed and lamps are very traditional, you need to find some continuity. I would suggest to start by adding colors to your walls. I would also suggest to enlarge the fireplace surrounds with either shallow decorative display cases this will make the wall you focal point. I would also suggest to search for a large carpet that has the colors you like and use that as your color pallet when searching for paint colors, pillows and accessories. hope this helps a bit |

These sound like some great ideas to get you started!! I have moved 9 times in 15 years. We moved into our current house three years ago and went from a center hall colonial in CT to a Italian theme in CA. When we moved in, I got rid of any thing we could live without and have slowly replaced items. For a year some rooms looked every empty!! I also try and make any big purchases...every nutural and classic. So they can fit into any theme by just changing the "accessories". I try not to spend a lot of money on the accessories, because I know in a few years we will probably not want an italian theme. I love your dark coffee table, end tables, lamps and the light in the entry! |

I hear it is such a beautiful place to visit!!! Hot though and lots of spiders! Don't know if that part is true or not but it sure does look nice! |
I always think the most helpful thing to do is start a collection/folder of tear-sheets. In other words, look through magazines and anything that you truly like in terms of decoration - tear it out. At some point, you'll start to understand just what you're currently attracted to with design/color/style - and what might be timeless vs. trendy. I find it helps a lot. :) |
i would just start with painting, remove all the southwest decor, change up the pillows and watch alot of HGTV! i love all those decorating shows like color splash, design on a dime... you can get some great ideas and they do it all for around $1,000. HAVE A PAINTING PARTY and invite all your friends, order pizza -- we did this when we moved into our home and it was such a lot of fun! |

If you just tear out pages from magazines that appeal to you, a theme will eventually turn up.:) |
