Water and babies... A couple of my friends with babies said that their pediatricians told them not to give the babies water. One ped even went as far to say that giving a baby water is the equivalent of fruit punch- now I thought that was a stretch  and frankly dont see the harm in giving them an ounce or so every few days. (this is like 4 mos+ of age) I know times changed but my daughter is 10 and I gave her water back then and she was fine :D Anyone have any experience or feedback? Just curious. |
I just heard that on the news today. I am from the old school and gave my kids water. |
That sounds ridiculous.. just remember... doctors/vets/dentists..etc dont know EVERYTHING.. and not EVERYTHING they say is true.. just do what you feel is right as a Mommy IMO there is nothing wrong with giving them water.. im sure almost everyone here were given water as babies and we're all fine right? :) |
I gave mine water starting at around 4 months. Her ped told me to start giving juice at that time. I thought that was crazy and way too much sugar. The same goes for fruit punch. BTW, at five years old my daughter now loves water and milk, will barely touch juice and can't stand sodas. |

Yeah I keep trying to tell them that everything doctors say aren't always true. Remember when they said milk was bad? then it was good- then pork was bad- then it was the other white meat- :D LOL!!! |

Also remember how vets say they recommend science diet for dogs? i know this is kinda a different example but it goes to show that they dont know everything |

That's a great example-- so true! |
I think it is because you have people that will actually give their babies more water than their formula because water is cheeper than formula or they will "water down" their babies formula to stretch out their can of formula to last them longer. I had to take Child Care classes to be a certified day care provider and we actually had to go over giving a baby their formula and the way to measure how many scoops to how much water in our Nutrition class. |
I HAD to give my daughters water as babies because if not, they would want to drink their formula every two hours! They were little piggies! When I started giving apple juice, I watered it half and half - probably did that until they were over 2 years old and could tell the difference! ;) I never gave fruit punch, kool aid or any sports drinks though and to this day my girls (14 and 12 years old) really only drink water and milk. The youngest will not touch a soda (but the oldest does enjoy her DP in moderation). She accidentally drank from my cup of Sprite once and about gagged! She does like Ovaltine milk though. They both drink lots of water and no sports drinks. Anyway, back to your question (sorry!)..... you didn't say WHY they don't recommend water. Is it the fluoride? Our house had a water softener and filter on the water. |
They never really said WHY the peds said not to give the babies water- he just said it was bad- but I will have them probe and get back to you- thanks again for the feedback |
My son is 17 and I was only 15 when I had him, but I always gave him a little water ( distlled ) a day to get the formula off his gums......I don't know why, it just made sense to me I guess. Angie |
I don't have kids, so I really wouldn't know. I thought you just fed them milk until their like 1.5:confused: (yeah I'm gonna be screwed when I have kids, LOL) From the way you guys are talking though, it reminds me like how every few years they change the position on which the baby should sleep, first it's tummy down, then back down, and keeps switching. |
