Any doctors or nurses or anyone who knows anything about medication? Quick question. I have been taking amoxicilian (sp?) since last Thursday for a sinus infection. I realized last night that it is really affecting me. It makes my heart do a weird thing... i think it is beating irregularly.i have to readjust or cough to make it stop... but only for the hour or so after i take it and at night it is causing me to not sleep. My sinus infection pain has gone away and i'm considering stopping taking the medication. As a child i was allergic to this medication... it caused me to be very hyper and overactive and alert. Since taking it as a child... i hadn't been sick often enough to know if it bothers me and casually mentioned it to my doctor but since the side effects weren't life threatening... we thought we'd give it a shot. Do you think it is ok to just stop taking it now that i'm feeling better or should i make an appointment with my doctor? (i won't be able to get in for a few days if i make an appoinement... is it ok to not take it until i see her?) Thanks! Marci |
You should call your doctor and ask if you should stop taking it until you can get in to discuss. It is an odd reaction to amoxicillin. Your sinus infection may not be completely gone, your doctor might want to put you on something else. If you can't reach your doctor or his/her nurse by phone by tomorrow morning, I would go to an urgent care before taking any more of the medication. FYI, I am an RN. |

Hi Marci Can you call you doctor? YOU should have a doctor on call tonight and report your symptoms. Your other option if you cant get your MD tonight would be just to skip the next dose tonight and call them in the morning. Each antiobiotic is prescribed a certain number of day. Each drug has been tested against different bacteria that causes different types of infections. Just because the symptoms are going away doesnt mean ALL the bacteria have been killed. So next time you try to use this drug, it may not work on you. YOU will have give the bacteria just enough of the drug to make it sick but not kill them all. So, the bacteria will get stronger and build a resitance to that type of drug. We as a community ( the world) have saved antibiotics for a raining day once they THINK the infection is gone. So we have created all these Super Bugs that are resistance to drugs. How was the med prescribed and how many doses are left? I know that feeling though. I have had it too. where you feel like you need to cough. Its freaky! Nurse Tinker:D |

i am supposed to take it three times a day.. this is day 6 and i am supposed to take it for 10 days. There ins't a "doctor on call"... i've actually never heard of that.... Canada must be different.... so i'm definitly not going to take it tonight... i think since i've had it in my system for so long it's causing this heart thing more regularly.. not just after i take it (like it was doing on day 1 and 2) so i'm going to call first thing in the morning Thanks Nurse Tinker :) |

Just because you start out ok, doesnt mean at some point you wont have a worse reaction. YOU know I did think of the whole canada thing when I first wrote the post. I have worked with a lot of Canadian nurses. In america, We have a doctor from each group on call. We call the answering service and tell them what the issue is and the on call doctor will call and tell you what to do. Of course if it is an emergency, we would call the emergency transport service. I have a lot of doctor friends too and have been out with them when they were on call:rolleyes: We never can go an hour with out a call..lol,... oh well, that is why they make the big bucks right? I hope they get to the bottom of things first thing in the morning! Lisa |

Thanks guys. i called my doctor.. she can't see me today but i'm going to the walk in clinic at her office tonight. |
Just to update you helpful ladies :) It was an allergic reaction to the medication and she was concerned about it affecting my heart but after listening ot my heart said it was ok. She didn't think i needed a new medication since i'm feeling fine. Thanks again YT nurses! |
Glad all is OK. Better safe than sorry. |
Hi Marci, I'm just seeing this. I'm glad you're doing better. Antibioticics are helpful to kill bacteria, but sometimes the side effects can be bad. |
Sorry I missed this ALWAYS report anything unusual to the doctor while taking meds......you can call the phone number and the answering service will call the doctor on call for you.......it is not unusual to have a reaction to antibiotics......and you had one...had you continued, it could have been even more serious..... I am very allergic to Cipro....had taken it over the yrs till until about 4 years ago I blew up like a balloon after just 2 doses......went to ER and after 4 shots of steroids I fillally was improving....ALL THIS AFTER NO REACTION EVER BEFORE. You can develop an allergy at ANY TIME! Remember that! Glad to hear you are better, but always let docs and nurses know that you had this reaction....so you will not be given this med or derivitives of this med ever again. After 18 years of selling pharmaceuticals, I am a big advocate of knowing all you can before you take any meds, and then reacting quickly if something weird occurs..... |
