natural gas car vs. hybrid? does anyone have a natural gas car??? I was talking about it with my hubby and his sister and her hubby... because her hubby ran into our car with a moving truck... its pretty bad... (my hubby was helping them move)so my hubby and I are thinking about getting a new car... I want something thats going to save $$$ at the pump and I dont know anyone who has a natural gas car... just wondering how you like it and if its hard to find a gas station that carries natural gas..??? |
Do you mean those with E85 (or something like that)? A friend of mine has a friend who has a pickup truck that runs on E85, there are only a few stations around town that have it...but he says it's like $2.89 a gallon, so thats a good thing! We rented a Hybrid Prius on vacation a couple months ago. It was nice, and really had good get-up & go. I think average we got 36 mpgs when we did the calculations ourselves. We did both city & highway driving. I'm gonna wait though because I heard in 2009 they're going to re-design the Prius somehow. |
I have had a Prius since 2005 and I love it, Generation II. I average 50 mpg overall. The tank holds about 11 gallons. I just filled it up yesterday, put 7 gallons in and it cost me $28.00 (paid $4.03/gal for regular gas). I get about 400 miles per fill up give or take, as I never wait to fill until nearly empty. There is a definite learning curve for getting the best mileage out of the Prius. The re-design of the Prius with improved MPG has been delayed until at least 2010. We anticipate the average MPG with the new design will be 90-95 mpg. I have no experience with E85 and have never seen it for sale in the Seattle area. If you are in urgent need of a car and are serious about a Prius, I would suggest buying now (new or used) and then trade it in in a couple of years for the new design. The Prius holds its value very well. I suspect there will be a long wait list for the Generation III Prius. Well, if you are actually talking about the E85 fuel, I can tell you what my friend just told me. They have a gas station in their town that carries that fuel and since her Suburban will take it, she checked out the price the other day. It was $3.50 and regular gas was $3.76. I thought it was supposed to be quite a bit cheaper than regular gas but doesn't look like it. Considering it's not supposed to get as good of mileage as regular gas, I don't see why you would buy it. Of course, you might not be talking about that fuel but I thought I'd throw my knowledge in of the issue. |
If you decide to get a hybrid, do a lot of research. I learned a long time ago that people get them to save on gas (well obviously) but in the long run you end up spending more on the hybrid then a regular car with the maintenance and wear and tear, so it defeats the purpose of getting one to save money. |
Civic Hybrid--can do no worng!! |
no Im not talking about the e85 Im talking about NATURAL GAS!!! its only $.76 a gallon here... and it lasts forever Im told... so I just was curious if anyone had one... I know that honda is now going the natural gas route at least in their civic ....but it looks like noone has any opinions about it... thanks anyways... ok the prius... is it a good "family" car? because we like to keep our cars until they die and we are going to need a "family" car in a few years if things go as planned... for example... is it roomy in the back seat? is it easy to get kids out of the car seat in the back? |
It will take you 7 years to make up the difference in the price of a hybrid vs. the gas savings that you will get. So unless you plan on keeping it for over 7 years you will lose money. |
The Prius is a great family car, and a great road car. It's not just about saving money on gas, it is about preserving the environment and reducing our dependence on oil. The Prius generates it's own power by charging its battery powered engine. It has two engines, one battery, one gas. In the Prius, the gas engine assists the electric motor. In the Civic, it is the other way around. The Civic hybrid gets about half the mpg that the Prius does. In comparing the two, the Prius IMO is the better value. |
