I think I've decided about the military!
 

After researching a whole bunch, I've decided to go talk to the Air Force recruiter and attempt to get accepted to OTS (officer Training school)

I checked out the AFOATS website and based on the schooling dates the earliest I could probably get in would be in January since the last training they have listed for this year starts on June 24, and I know there's no way I would have everything ready to go then.

I fit into the AF's weight chart for my height, but I'm not really in shape right now, so thats definitely something I'll be working on, if any one has any hints please let me know.

i'm going to start studying for the ASVAB test as well. I took a few sample ones online and scored 100% on Arithmetic Reasoning, Word knowledge, paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics knowledge. I did okay on general science, but def. need to brush up. I didn't do so hot on electonics information, auto shop, mechanical comprehension, or assembling objects. The officer job i want doesn't require high scores on those sections, but i figure the better I do on each section the higher chance I have of getting in and getting the job I want.

I read that only about 60% of those that apply to go OTS get in. Anyone have any advice on how to ensure I'm part of that 60%? I know I will have to meet w/ 3 people that are high in command and have an interview.

and as for the dogs (so no one thinks i'm giving them up), laney would stay with mom and i'd have to find a place for Slade while i'm in training.. but if i don't go til January, I would have plenty of time to make those arrangements. Once I'm out of training I would live on base housing, but since i would be an officer I would get an actual house and be allowed to have the dogs! Of course I'd have to make arrangments if I was deployed, but AF deployments only last 4-6 months once every few years, so it would be that bad I don't think.

I know AF is the hardest branch to get into right now since they were recently downsizing.

I guess if I don't get accepted, I'll go Army.

I definitely won't go coastguard or navy, I'd never pass their swimming test. And I just don't picture myself as a marine.

My son just joined the NAVY, But he has his mind set on being a NAVY SEAL, he graduates high school this June, and his training starts this August, I'm very proud of him, I think the military life is invigorating...

Make the most of yourself, reach your highest hights, not everyone has the opportunity to reach their potential...

Sounds like a great plan! I wish you all the luck in the world... I just wanted to let you know though... my little bro is in the Air Force... He has gotten deployed for more than a year at a time, come home for 4 months and was deployed for another 10 months to Iraq. So deployment there is when and where they need you. They TELL you they can't or won't do it back to back like that, but they will.

I couldn't do the military life, Im way too rebellious by nature! LOL But I admire and support everyone who defends our country! :)

The AF has stricter rules to get in for sure and if you don't make it and you join the Army, keep in mind that in a couple of years you can cross train into the A.F.

My father was in the Air Force for 25 yrs...we had a very interesting life..we were not rich, but never lacked for anything..got good medical and dental care. Never appreciated that until I had to pay for it!!!LOL

Best wishes to you and whatever you choose to do..I wanted to join the AFtoo..but in the 60's most of us got married...

My advice:

Get it in writing. Don't just accept their word or what they tell you about any agreement regarding what you want, where you will be going, what you will be doing and what you are getting. It will have no value if it isn't in writing. And there won't be a darn thing you can do about it. So....get it in writing. Recruiters have quotas they are targeting and are there to enlist you. What happens to you after that is usually of no concern to them.

Deployment rates depend on the job you do, and the base your at.
Just letting you know, and the time frame of how long you go for depends on where you go. (my husband has been in the AF for 6 years active and just switched over to reserves) And when you get to your base, you only go right into housing if you're married otherwise you have to live off base as an officer.

They can't refuse to honor it if it is in writing.

I did AFROTC for two years while doing my undergrad.

Training for the Air Force is not as hard as the other branches. The Air Force are less stringent. They measure your waist though! If you are not height/weight qualified!

Tips on getting in shape.....RUN! Run as often as you can. That's key to passing any training....they'll always ask you to run. I think it's 2 miles in 18 mins max? I think the other services are like 16 mins or under.

I did the ASVAB during HS with friends and it's just general questions. You get your score immediately. After taking the exam....recruiters called me non-stop.

Be honest in the interview and upfront. Show them that you're more than willing to do anything it takes.

Officer deployments for the AF are no longer than a year and you'll go possibly every other year.

My ex-boyfriend is a Navy pilot. He went through OTS while we were dating. He changed a lot in the process and it seemed pretty dang hard from the outside looking in.

I hope that whatever you decide it works out :)

Remember, you are their's for 7 years no exceptions no matter what, no matter what they tell you! And they won't give you anything in writing with any kind of guarantee! My ex brother in law has been in Korea for 2 years, so don't believe the only 4-6 month deployment.

My son, Trent, spent almost 17 years in the Coast Guard. He was an Air Survivalman. Those are the guys you see in the action movies they let down in the little chair from a helicopter and they pick people out of rafts or out of the water or they drop into the water to rescue people. It's exciting, but very dangerous. "The Guardian" I think was the name of a movie that came out recently about rescue swimmers, which are Air Survivalmen. He was also a fireman and a jet engine mechanic before he got out of the Guard.

Well, I didn't say what I started out to say. My son, Trent, had to pass a hard swimming test to get into the Coast Guard. They drop them, in full gear, into the water and they have to swim about half a mile and then they pick them back up. They also put them in what looks like a helicopter without the rotor blades and tail, speed them down a slide into the water, turn them upside down, and they have to get out and to the surface. That scenario was in "Top Gun." Trent got out of the Coast Guard when they downsized 12 years ago.

My husband was a Navy flier during Viet Nam. They could have sent him anywhere, but you know where he spent most of his time???? BERMUDA.

That is true. My husband was an officier in the AF, and had to live off base because the housing on base was only for married officiers.... they do give you a housing allowance though...

My son is a Marine and he loves it!!! He has been been to Iraq and Okinawa but is home now. He LOVED it and wants to go back. Whatever makes him happy. :flag42:

I think the AF is a great choice! My best friend, Chuck, just joined and he loves it. He's so happy out there and if loving every minute of it. Good luck with all the tests and everything. I'll keep you in my mind and hoping the best for you!
