Glad the bleeding has stopped. Are there any vets in your area that work with nonpet animals that you could give a call too?

What a gorgeous baby dove!! And I'd say that the little thing looks really comfy and safe in your hubby's hand. So you don't need a pet taxi - he'll just have to hold him all the time and be the new mommy!! ;)

He actually looks pretty old (all his feathers) - and if he was learning to fly, he should be able to eat fine on his own. He would have been fending for himself soon.

You've gotten good advice. Not sure if I'd try the pet taxi or just putting him back in the nest. But he's so cute. And how sweet of you guys to rescue him!! :)

One thing you need to consider. Doves are the only animal in existance who MATE FOR LIFE. Meaning the mom and dad are always together. When babies are born they BOTH take care of them. We have a LOT of doves in our yard and a lot of nests with babies. I have had them fall out of the nest in my pool and have sucessfully placed them back in the nest and the parents do not reject them. In one nest there were 2 babies just starting to fly. Ladybug barked and scared them and both flew.. One ran right into the fence and the other onto the lawn. Ladybug tried to get it so it flew again. Then we couldn't find either one again after seeing them for the last time in a yard 2 houses down. 3 days later, we walked outside and there sat both babies on the top of the fence near thier nest. Mom and Dad were nearby. Don't ask me how they got them to come hoime and how they ever got one to stay on the fence while they rounded up the other one. By the end of the day, they were both back in the nest until they got a little bigger. The one that went in the pool, I thought wasn't going to make it. I placed it back in the nest and within an hour mom and dad were both there to dry it off and clean it up. I watched thru my kitchen window and I could see them watching me. I felt like they were saying THANK YOU. They were both sittin on my roof watching me as I fished it out of the pool and placed it in the nest. Having owned birds before, I will say that it is important to stop the bleeding as they don't have a lot of blood to start with. If you have any of the powder that is used on dogs toenails to stop bleeding, try that. As soon as you can get the bleeding stopped, I would try to place it in it's nest andwatch closely to see if the parents will take care of it.

Not that it really matters, but doves do NOT mate for life. Parrots do. And I think there's other animal species who also mate for life. A male dove will mate with any female dove that is agreeable. And if she isn't, he'll pester her to death. I raised doves for years. And parrots and other psittacines....doves are sweet and cute but they aren't exceedingly intelligent.

do you have something like Animal Control? I know here in canada they deal with all types of animals.. wild or domestic. I know it can be frustrating but dogs ARE animals.. and i know that that instinct woudl come out in Layla as scary as it is. But it seems that your husband caught her early before she could do too much damage. We have a neighbour cat that kills birds in our backyard. Yesterday a couple kids and i caught her cornering a baby bird and moved the bird to another back yard. Anyways.. sorry bella. i'm rambling. I'd call animal control or something equal to it. Or even an SPCA could probably direct you in the right direction.

Where i live in canada (i found 5 featherless baby pigeons) the animal control, wildlife recovery center, and the SPCA said that they would not take them because they are considered "pests". they also refused to tell me what to feed them to keep them alive so i made some very thin baby pablum and fed them that through an eye-dropper. so if you find that it won't eat seed then try the pablum although it looks old enough to eat normally.

I PM'd you with what to do. Doves are very hardy birds. Don't put any ointment on him though..they tend to "preen" that stuff off and it can get into their little lung sacs which won't be good for him.

And if he's close to being able to fly, he should be able to eat seeds and cracked corn. Baby doves get all their nutrition from the mom's "milk" which is different from most birds who regurgitate food into their babies...so if he isn't old enough to eat seed, he needs to be with his mom or he'd probably not make it. He's fully feathered though, so I'm sure he's eating seed!

milk?

Shelby&Seymour 05-16-2008 03:13 AM

Be careful about what seed you choose. I don't know about wild birds, but I DO know that an old neighbor of mine gave their parakeet canary food before and it killed it.
Good Luck..... hope that all goes well with the little dove. Keep us posted!!

It's good that the bleeding has stopped. If the wound isn't serious, the best thing you can do for this baby is put some medicine on the wound and put it back where its parents can take care of it. It looks fully feathered, so unless the injury is life threatening, he will be fine outside with his parents. Just be sure Peaches can't get to him again. Maybe you could put him in an x-pen outside where his parents can get to him, but you can also get to him to take care of him if he needs it. Good luck and God bless you for looking out for one of His little creatures.

Update

Thank you all so much for all of your help and concern for this sweet little baby Dove. Sadly, it passed away yesterday  My hubby and I discovered yesterday that it's wing was indeed broken....and the bone was sticking out :( I have pictures, but I will spare you all (I took these before the Dove passed away and was going to post them...but I didn't do it fast enough :() It couldn't fly and I'm sure it was in pain....so as unfortunate and sad as it is, maybe this is best. At least the poor little thing is at peace now and isn't suffering. Stuck in a pet taxi not being able to fly was no life for him/her anyway  We did try, we did everything we could....but it just didn't make it

P.S. - My Peaches ended up killing another one while we were gone today  I walked out in my backyard and not to be graphic, but she had already eaten most of it. I just don't know what to do with her anymore. She kills everything  I know it's just instinct I guess, but we are just so sick of it. I am tired of going out there and finding dead birds, squirrels, etc. It's just sad and depressing  I wish she would stop this!! But I know she never will :(

Thank you all again so much for all of your help and concern, I appreciate it greatly

awwww Brooke, How sad , I'm so sorry, but you did everything in your power to save the baby dove and bless you for that.

Not sure what to do about peaches killing birds, cause your right, it's the nature for them to hunt.

I will never forget, when our Husky killed my daughters pet bunny, it was so heart breaking.

For My Coby 05-17-2008 02:14 PM

It's a very natural circle of life - and one that I just can't ever get used to. :(

So sorry........

nvnvgirl 05-17-2008 05:21 PM

Awww, Brooke~ well, you tried and I'm sure that at least the dove was as comfortable as it could have been at the end.
I think that it's very intinctual b/c one day not too long after we'd gotten Max I had my doves out on the patio and one of them can't really fly (LONG LONG story, but he's lived forever!!), so when I clean his cage sometimes I leave the door open and he likes to stand on the door....once he hopped down onto the ground and in the blink of an eye (or even faster), Max had that guy by his neck:eek:. Luckily I was right there before he decided to give him a good shake, b/c I'm sure that's what was coming next, but this little dove avoided death once again. Now, Max pretty much ignores the birds, unless there's some big wing flapping contest that makes a lot of noise, but Madison was practically GLUED to their cages for the first week he was here:rolleyes:. It's just their nature I guess.....I'm sorry about the dove but if he had a compound fracture, they probably would have amputated his wing and he'd have to live in a wildlife reserve anyhow. And I'm sorry about the other wildlife that makes the misjudgment to come into your yard, but what can you do??? Hugs from Max and Madison!

BabyFidgette 05-17-2008 05:57 PM

I'm so sorry to hear the dove passed away. :( But as others said, you did try you best, and I commend you for that! :D

4doggiemama 05-17-2008 09:30 PM

Sorry that your love and care wasn\'t enough. You did your best, though. We have a Latino Cockatiel that is about 13 yrs. old. During the day she is not locked in her cage and spends most of the day sitting on top of her it. Periodically something outside her window scares her and she flies around the room and sometimes misjudges where to land. Old age is setting in. My furbabies are curious as to why she is there but they leave her alone. It might have to do, though, that she spreads her wings and hisses at them. Again, I am so sorry it did not turn out well.
