Cicadas!!! What should I do?!?! They're back. I'm scared that they'll get bad around here and I'm horrible with bugs. How should I take Rosie out? I really don't know what to do. I can't stand bugs, especially these. Here is an article about them Cicadas invade East Tennessee I'm seriously stressing about this. Last time we had them I didn't have Rosie. I literally would run into my house and in my car. This is gonna be a long month. |
Oh no poor you.I hate bugs too... shoes for the dog maybe... But I understand I would be stress too... good luck :( |
I have never heard of this bug before. I hate anyplace this is infected with bugs.. would they harm your baby.. the story does not say much about them... anne |
I don't think they're harmful. They can't fly and run into ppl. They say the sidewalks get completely covered with them to the point that you can't walk outside wo stepping on them. Let's just say I can even vacuum bugs, especially bugs this size. Aaaaahhhhh...what am i gonna do? |
My mom used to say..."It might not hurt me but it could cause me to hurt myself" and I totally inderstand that. I have hurt myself trying to get away from a bug or get one off of me...especially spiders. When I was a child, I was afraid of no bug, no lizard, no snake. In fact, we used to take the 'shells' that these cicadas shed...you could squeeze the top of the back and the legs would open up. You could then put it on your nose, stop squeezing and it would sorta clamp lightly to your nose. Then you popped up in someone's face like that and it sure scared the heck out of the ladies!:p These days....I can't stand the thought of a bug on me. :eek::eek: My granddaughter catches those big moths and takes them around the house somewhere else so her G'ma won't be scared. Sweet! I don't know of any advice I could give you to help you cope with these things. Maybe buy a beekeeper suit. And a mini one for your baby. (JK) LOL Actually, my heart goes out to you. I know how distressed you must be. I would be too!!:D |
Aren't Cicadas the bugs that only show up every 15 or so yrs. and sit in trees and sing? I think they are fascinating! Always have since I was a child. I remember our kitties eating them if they could catch one. They sing in the evening. Miss them when they aren't around. Sorry that they scare you. |
I remember how stressed out you are about bugs, I wish I had some advise but have no idea what to tell you. I'll just pray they leave quickly:) |

There is nothing I can do except find a way to deal with it:( I hope it doesnt get bad around here. Some places get so bad that they can't walk outside wo stepping on them:eek: |

The good news is that I remember someone posted a looooong time ago that her yorkie LOVED eating them :eek:, and that they are very nutritious for them to eat. Think of it as a crispy snack.:p Maybe she can get rid of all of them for you. (seriously, I would just DIE...die I say! I hate bugs! eewwww!) |

I really would freakin' DIE. :eek::eek::dogzzz: |
We get them in MD for anywhere 6-8 weeks every 17 years! My first time with them I had really long hair and one got caught up in my hair when I was trying to pump gas. :eek::eek: I freaked out and was wailing around trying to get it out! I know the attendants were laughing at me inside! This 2nd time (about 3 years ago) it wasn't so bad where I live. They aren't prone to sandy soils-Thank Goodness! Also, don't let your dog eat them, it is not good for animals, dogs and cats. |
Oh, those things look terrifying :eek: Good luck, I hope they don't stay long! |

I'm sorry that you're afraid of them...they can look pretty scary. I grew up in South Georgia though, and I found the sounds they make soothing, takes me back to my childhood. However, when you get a huge amount of them going at the same time, the noise can be deafening!! |
We have them in Kansas every summer. The dogs love the chase them and catch them if they are low and buzzing. I know the dogs have eaten them before, but I try to take them away from the dogs, because I am afraid that the hard parts (legs, head) might cause damage to the inside of the dogs. I have been told that they cannot even bit, because they have not mouth parts, but just those scratchy feet freak me out. |

I have never seen one that I know of, but I LOVE the sound in the dog days of summer here with the buzzing in the air! I know, Im weird... but we don't get swamped with them and they come out around August/sept and buzz all day and it just reminds me of the heat and sun and I love it! Im sorry you are infested with them though! :( I hate bugs myself, especially ones that fly! |
We had them here in Ohio about 5 years ago....they were horrible!! My house wasnt too bad with them. I only went in the front of the house because the back yard was worse. It was like we were under attack by alien bugs that summer. I was on my way to work one day, my husband was driving me and some dumb kid threw his bike in front of our truck and we hit it. We had to get out of the truck when the police came and it was so horrible I was running in circles until I got back in the truck and I remembered I had cracked the window and I seen one trying to crawl in and I rolled it up really quick and crushed it....eeewwww I hate them things...In some areas they werent bad but areas with lots of trees is where its horrible...they like swarm together, they kept getting in my hair...I wore my hair up the whole time so they wouldnt get stuck in it. Good luck with them....I think when they come back here again I'm moving until they are gone....I actually bought a shirt that says I survived the Cicada's in 2003. They are the most disgusting bugs in history....and my old dog used to eat them and it made her tummy upset....so dont let your dog eat them. If they came back now....I would stock up on pee pads cuz i wouldnt be walking my baby in that but thats how bad I hate them. good luck!! |
Do you have a leaf blower? I would get one and blow the sidewalk clear before I took Rosie out. At least they won't hurt you or Rosie and they do make a nice sound. I grew up with 3 brothers so I pretty much am not afraid of any bugs - unless they're poisonous. Good luck!! |
Butterflies...that's what I'll keep thinking. Haha. I wish I could get Rosie to go on her pee pads, but if she's determined to go outside she won't stop whining. I guess I trained her pretty well:rolleyes: I wish I could move for 1 month:) Hopefully we won't get them that bad since our apartment complex is only about 10 years old. My only concern is that the woods are right behind my complex. I keep imagining waking up one day, opening the door, seeing the whole ground covered, and several of them flying in. Yikes! |
