Making some changes
 

Back when I was 22 I started going to school at the University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE ROLL!!). My goal was to become a history teacher. It is something I had always wanted to do. I met my now ex wife, we got married and I dropped out of school so that I could support my new family. I got into IT because I ahd always been good with computers, got certifications and experience under my belt and started making good money.

Fast forward 9 years. I am 31 now and divorced. I have been unhappy in the IT field for at least the last 5 years. My problem was/is the money is way to good to just up and quit. Well, starting the fall of 08, I am enrolled at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. I am going to finish my history degree and get my master's and teaching certificate all at one time. It is about time I did something that makes ME happy. It is gonna be weird being one of the oldest peopla in classes with a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds ixed in with with some 20 somethings here and there. I am also nervous because I will be working full time and going to school full time. So wish me luck. I know the rewards of having my degree and teaching will be totally worth it!

That is AWESOME!! I'm all for anyone going back to school to do what you love. When I was in college most of the students were "non-traditional" in age and it was great! I think you will find that the younger students will look up to your experiences and insight!

I did the same thing as you almost (no marriage though) but I was in school for business and then up and quit and went into IT. the money was so good I stayed for almost 10 years. I am 31 now and started back to school nights this past spring to finish my degree. If you go to night school full time you could have more people your age in your classes. Thats what I decided to do.

Wishing you success with your plans. While I was not 31 when I went back to college, I was still an older student; I was 24. It was a little wierd with the "younger" kids but I found it to be okay because it made kept me that more focused on my goals. Good luck and GO FOR IT!:D

I admire you for going back. I don't know anything about the University of Alabama, but here at Kansas State it's pretty common to have at least 1 or 2 untraditional students in each class.

When i was at Clemson and here (GSU) as well, we always have had at least one or two 'older' students in class... usually they've been 40+, so i wouldn't worry about it too much!

I always preferred pairing up w/ the older ones for projects and such cause I knew they weren't going to play around or try to get out of doing their amount of work.

Congrats! I am 24 going on 25 this year and have been enrolled in my local college for night classes for 1 yr thus far... it is interesting to see a new mix and I too prefer older more mature people in my class, you learn more, less time wasted and the professor tends to be less stress since he/she does not have to stop every so often to get the class back on track... good luck !! Thanks ya'll! If I can get the financial aid stuff worked out I am gonna try and get into some mini mester's this summer.

my DH went back to college 6 years ago at age 39... it was HARD for us to get used to him working only part time but we did it.. he was actually laid off from his job and we decided for him to go to school for his dream job...
he is now an Elementary art school teacher and LOVES his job, AND actually makes a pretty good paycheck! I will never get to quit my job but hey, it keeps my babies in nice things... hehe... skin and fur are terribly spoiled!
