I have a WEIRD Question I had to think about this and figure out how to say it so I don't sound like a monkey ....and don't even know if anyone can help.... but this is my problem I recently moved from a house to an apartment. After being here 3 months and showering and bathing the girls - I've noticed all of us ITCHING. I think it's the water. Just Saturday I gave the girls their baths and neither has stopped scratching :( I rinse them really REALLY good so I know it isn't that ....my girls have NEVER scratched like they are now. :( They're 6 and 4 years old and this is all new to me. We use the same shampoo and conditioner as always but holy cow - they're so itchy :(:( What can I do to fix this ? Apartments aren't going to change their water supply & I can't gather RAIN Water because of mosquitos - I need to do something about this.....has anyone else ever had this problem ?? Is there a water treatment I can get and maybe fill up a big container for their final rinse so I'm not using the water from my shower ??? If anyone has an answer you will be my BEST FRIEND EVER !!! |
Is this water system different from the one at your old house? Like did you have a septic system there or city water? Does the apartment complex use a water softener? Just trying to figure out what would be different from the water before... I guess you could get one of those Britta (sp?) water filter things.... I don't know...but being an itchy monkey isn't any fun. |

I know they don't have fleas cause it seems like it's only right after a bath they start scratching and I really look for fleas - saw nothing. Does Britta have Filters for Showers ?? I use an attachment hose and if they do - I'll get one asap !! thanks deb ! I didn't know if anyone would answer - this isn't exactly the most interesting post I ever did lol |
There IS a filter you can get for your shower head. I almost bought it in Germany b/c the water there was so hard it was messing up my hair. Let me go see if I can find it.... |
Hey V, if I'm not mistaken putting baking soda in the water helps the skin itchies....Have you tried that?....good luck with the girls, poor babies! |
|
Some water is really high in chlorine so maybe that's the problem. I did a google search for water filter and this is the first that came up http://www.waterionizer.org/site/898596/product/RS01 There are tons though. |
Oh! That's a better idea! Much less expensive than the Johnathon one! |
I KNEW if I posted here someone would have an answer !! Thank you ! :)I'm going to try the baking soda thing too - would that dry out their hair I wonder ?? I know my head itches and its driving me crazy to see them scratching so much and I can't help.....I tried a skin conditioner that I used back when Chanel used to play in the hose and even that isn't working thanks so much for the links !!! |
I did a quick search and found these two things you can add to the water until you get a filter..... BAKING SODA! It really helps itchy skin. If you put just a little bit (1/4 cup) of baking soda into a warm bath, it can really decrease your urge to itch! I've done this for years!" add just a 1/4 cup of the raw Apple Cider Vinegar to the bath water, always keep in the refrigerator. Good luck! |

me too ! I have to go read that link - it seems vinegar has many purposes but I'd have never thought to pour some (diluted) on the girls.....looking back - I remember being on the swimteam and having green hair from the chlorine - I think I used to use vinegar to counteract it LOL Joan - I just went to your link - THEY HAVE A MONKEY picture on it - hahaha - FIGURES |

If you can't change your water so it doesn't causing them to itch, I don't know about there, but around here they have shops where you can go and bathe your dogs yourself. It's not as expensive as a groomer, but it's better than doing it at home. |

The vinegar and water rinse takes out the hard water, kills bacteria and is a natural source of bug repellent. My grandmother used it on my hair all the time while I was growing up and I never got lice like most of the kids did in school. I use the distilled white vinegar on my dogs once a month to help clean out any hard water or bacteria build up. |

I am glad someone mentioned the water filter because that was my first thought. Hope the baking soda helps you guys in the meantime. Scratching can drive you nuts. Just when you thought you were settled in, huh V? Always something to mess things up when they are going so well. At least you can fix it. |
Yes, it very well could be the water. Home Depot sells a cheaper one, for ~$20... Paragon Water Systems Shower Water Filter - P2201 at The Home Depot Have you changed your laundry detergant or fabric softener or your sheets? That could also be a cause too... |

and nope - I haven't changed one thing. Why I know it's the water now is I used a different shampoo for each this last bath to see what happened- & both are scratching at about the same rate ....it's bad when the whole bed shakes in the middle of the night.... :( thank you for that link !! I have a Home Depo closeby and will def go get one...I went out in the pouring rain to get the vinegar today lol - |
V Is the grass there been treated with something? if it has maybe thats making them itch and they are climbing all over you making you itch too. just a thought. hope you figure it out. |
I was going to suggest vinegar too!! Vee, I hope the girls (and YOU) are itch free soon!! That must drive you crazy. KISSES to the girls! :D |
