cat food? I just aquired a 6 week old kitten. I need to feed it and dont know what to get. Ive never done the study and cats are even more carnavors than dogs. The only places I have are walmart, petsmart, and 1 vets office that has Wellness. Does wellness make cat food too? Anything in the others that are actually healthy? |
:)I feed mine chicken soup for cats |
I feed one of my cats an all raw diet. The other cat gets raw in the morning and grain-free canned (Evo) in the evenings. I feed nature's variety raw medallions. Wellness is a good food, and they do make cat food. I believe they make grain-free canned foods now so I'd go with that out of the choices you have. Cats are desert animals and don't drink a lot of water on their own (normally)...they traditionally were designed to get most of their water from their food (the fresh meat from the prey they kill). A cat can actually survive on a raw diet with no access to water, but I do leave water out..my cats take short drinks from it once or twice a day. I think it's very important to feed cats a moist diet because feeding a dry diet (kibble) requires them to drink much more water on their own. They will drink more on kibble but not enough to keep them hydrated like they should be...so you basically get a cat that's a little dehydrated all the time if you feed kibble..not good for them. Couple that with grains, and you'll see why so many cats now get kidney and bladder crystals and stones, diabetes, etc. Cats also are 100% carnivores and were not made to eat any type of grain or carbohydrate. So I'd definitely try to find a grain-free moist food. |

I grew up in backwoods GA & when we got Osiris 8 years ago (still in GA), we didn't know any better. Where I come from, keeping your cat exclusively indoors (as we did) was still pretty unheard of....still is, I think, to many people back there today (my hometown--so no one gets their britches in a bunch) & hard cat food was common b/c it was cheaper. So, in my uneducated knowledge, I fed Osiris a hard cat food diet for years. Until about 2 years ago - when I had to rush him to the Emergency Vet b/c he was yowling & oozing yuck everywhere. Osiris had bladder stones. All those years I had no idea I was harming him - but I sure learned fast! Now, all of my kitties are on Solid Gold canned cat foot. I get the flats of it at PetCo so that I'm always in stock. Since then, no more problems. So, definitely pay attention to the person posting above me. That was a great informative post! I *wish* someone had told me that earlier in my kitty's life. |
