Went to the taping of the Ellen show Ellen Degeneres was taping her show in Chicago yesterday and I won VIP tickets to see her show. I am not sure what VIP stood for but we stood in line with our tickets for 5 hours in the rain, cold and wind then we got seated (we did get third row) and sat there for another hour then our great Mayor of Chicago introduced her as Helen Degeneres, lol. She looked like she was freezing and didn't want to be there. After the cameras stopped each time for breaks she stood on stage and never interacted with the audience and never smiled. Robin Williams was the guest and he was crazy but funny and was great with the audience. Then Carly Smitson and Michael Johns the Americam Idol cast offs were the musical guests. They sang a song and then Ellen said they would sing again later in the show, then they sang another song right away. I swear they didn't tape a whole shows worth. after 1 1/2 hours they started to pass out free Pizza from Oprah and it started to pour so Ellen says we're going to let you go and that was it. Very different than I expected. She played one game that no one knows how the couple was picked and they won a car! I wonder if she is like that with her studio audiences?? But it was an experience! The show airs Tuesday 5/6. Will be interesting to see how it is edited. |

I've only heard good things about her and her interaction with her audiences so maybe she was having an off day. That's odd that it would be outside! |
i've been to david letterman and he didn't interact with the audience at all. it was like a hit and run taping. he was grumpy and looked down at his desk when the cameras were off. |
I guess doing it every day gets tiresome too. I still love her. We couldn't believe they would pick the beginning of May in Chicago for an outdoor taping. They didn't tell us where until you got there but did say dress for the weather. Thousands of people stood in the standby line from 5:30 in the morning. The lines wrapped all around city blocks!!! So it was still an experience. Of course today was beautiful!!! That's Chicago! |
Thanks for the behind the scenes insight. I am sorry it turned out to be so disappointing. It is interesting though to see how TV shows and movies are made. My daughter was an extra in a Brad Pitt and Sean Penn movie a month or so ago and since she is only 14 I had to be there with her on the set. It's amazing how they can take something so minor and make it appear so different with all the editing and special effects. I can't wait to see the movie just to see what they do with it. Unfortunately it is not coming out until next year!! |
Oh I sorry you didn't have a good time. I hope it was an off day tho. I love her, think her show is great. I'd hate to hear she's always like that with her audience. |
How very cool!! I like Ellen Degeneres! I bet she was funny in person! Lucky duck! |

I love her show |
The newspaper here is saying that the calling her Helen was staged so who knows. It was still cool to be there!!! |
I watched that episode. Did you make it on tv at all??? I love Ellen! |
I watched it too! I'd love to go see her in person! I've always loved Ellen and I'm so glad that she's come back and done so well. She deserves it after what Hollywood did to her the first go-round:mad:. She looked like she was freezing there though; everyone else was in sleeveless tops (at least onstage) and she kept her jacket on the entire time. So, did you see yourself in the tape? Villette~ that lady's name is Kitty! I remember that; it was so funny! She used to have her on every now and then but hasn't said anything about her this season at all! Hope the lady is ok! And she still calls that other older lady~ is her name Gertrude? Oh my gosh, that lady is funny! |
No we didn't see ourselves!! She was freezing! Before she came out they had these large dryer vent looking things pointing at her chair blowing heat but they pulled them up before taping. It was fun seeing her in person!!! It was funny to see what they cut out and how they edited it too. The music and dancing was a blast. |
