My Hubbie Has Kidney Stones & Surgery on Tues.!
 

My husband has a big kidney stone, about 6-8mm and now the doctor said that he probably won't be able to pass it himself. They took xrays and the stone has hardly moved, it is still way up high just out of the kidney. They are going to go in there and put a stint and use a laser to break up the stone. Has anyone gone through this or had any experience with it? What is he in for?:confused:

Sorry to hear that. I had small stones a few months back and that was painful enough. My Dad had the lithotripsy done on his and it worked. Good luck to your husband

The stones can cause so much pain that anything is an improvement. If they can break them without having to do the actual kidney surgery, recovery is much faster. Sending prayers for you both.

I've never had them but a friend of mine suffers from them. He doubles over when he has an occurence. Prayers for your husband for a quick recovery.

Thanks for your prayers and good thoughts!! I actually probably need them because my hubbie is such a Drama King when it comes to pain!! He'll be a big baby and run me ragged!! Last time he was sick I gave him a bell to ring and that's all I heard all day!! I know better this time, no more bells!!

Thanks for info and hugs! So sorry you had to go through that!! My poor hubbie had to drive himself to the ER because I'm a flight attendant and I was still on a trip!! He was afraid that he was going to pass out while driving. (Luckily he didn't!) They gave him vicodin and he used it the first 2 days but it's been a week and it hasn't been hurting, it just isn't moving!! So they have to go in and blast it!! Does drinking soda give you stone? If it does, then I'm in trouble too!!

Drinking coke doesn't give you stones, but it's important to drink water as well, certain soft drinks and coffee both contain caffeine, which acts as a diuretic. So you can drink and drink and your "body" will still be thirsty, you may not realize it though. So drink that water, especially if you live in a hot climate, or exercise a lot. Btw, flying dehydrates too, so you might want to add extra water on that account.

So sorry to hear of this. I worked as a volunteer in the recovery room of our hospital, and I can tell you that the people who had their stones broken up by laser did very well afterwards. I almost think that is easier than having to pass a large one on your own.

I had kidney stones a couples of years ago. It woke me out a dead sleep on a Sunday morning. I ended up going to the ER vomiting and hunched over in severe pain. After confirming that I had a 4 mm stone with a CT scan, I was given morphine, something for nausea and sent home with an appt to see a urologist. The urologist gave me antibiotics, told me I would probably not pass the stone and scheduled cystoscopy and lithotripsy for the coming Thursday. I went to work and just took my pain meds. The day of surgery I had an x-ray to confirm the placement of the stone. Then after waiting around most of the day I finally had my surgery. It wasn't bad at all. No stitches or anything like that just a small spot on my back where they did lithotripsy. As soon as I woke up the pain was gone. The doc told me to finish taking antibiotics, strain my urine because I would be passing tiny particles of stone and come back in a week to have the stent removed. I thought having the stent removed was going to be painful but it wasn't. I had another x-ray and the doc told me I still had tiny stone particles in my kidney. He told me to do this maneuver every night where I'm practically standing on my head and have someone firmly slap me on my lower back to jar my kidney and help the stone particles pass. He told me to drink lots of water, limit my caffeine intake and that once you have a kidney stone it is likely that you will have another at some point.:rolleyes: Needless to say I drink tons of water whereas before I would drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day and 1 glass of tea at night.
