Sad Post: Heartbreaking Kentucky Derby - Eight Bells Put Down I'm hardly over Barbaro - and then to see that this filly (first filly to run since 1999) had to be euthanized at the track, tragic. Could barely finish reading the story this morning, got so teared up. :( EIGHT BELLS |
Me too. She was just majestic (as they all are) - but to be injured the way she was and put down all because of $$ and entertainment just seems SO WRONG. I never knew how often this happens with Race horses.....:(:(:( and it really IS tragic - each and every one of them. :( Rest in Peace Eight Bells.... |
It's heartbreaking. It seems anytime we decide to use animals for profit we end up hurting the animals. Some of the comments on the article you linked were really interesting. |
I agree, it's so very sad and tragic :( |
I've always loved horse races but now I can't even watch one after Barbaro and now what a sad day in racing :*( I'm an avid horse lover and started out in horses before dogs and it's just a sad turn of events :( Rest in Peace Eight Belles! Donna |
Wasn't that so sad? I'd just gotten home from betting on the race and watching it! My friend's girlfriend bet on Eight Belles just b/c she was a girl horse and she was so excited and proud of her for coming in second! We left the casino just after the race, so we didn't know til about 15 min. later when we got home.....we finally got hold of our friend ( I was hoping they'd gone into the casino) an hour later and he said his gf STILL hadn't stopped crying. Just so tragic. I've always loved to watch horse racing, but this is the kind of thing that makes you realize that just about any type of sport can be dangerous. :( Eight Belles, you represented the females out there and outran a bunch of guys; may you rest in peace! |
I was so saddened. I dont agree with horse racing |
I totally agree. So heartbreaking. Poor horse-y. :( |
Tragic. She was an absolutely beautiful animal. I only saw one picture. She was magnificent. Now because of this ridiculous, greedy world, she's gone. |

She was an amazing filly and tried so hard to win. I am still so upset over this. RIP Eight Belles |
I heard someone close to the situation say that they do the best they can for their horses and just pray that something like this won't happen. They are working on special surfaces to prevent such tragic events. My thought to that was, "Why expose a horse to such risk? What is the point of racing if it means this as a result?" I think it is cruel risk wise, no matter how much wonderful care they receive in the preceding years. |
