Wine experts help please Can someone help me please...i am training to work at an Italian Restaurant and they have a really BIG wine list. I know nada about wine:( It doesn't help that the whole menu is in Italian, even though i studied it last yr, i am familiar with some words but not all. Anyhow the girl that was training me was using a lot of terms because the customers were asking her about the wine, and she was saying things like dry, medium body, smooth, letting it breath, etc. i was so confused, all i know is red wine is good for meat and white whine is good for fish and chicken cause it's more light and i think is supposed to be cooled:confused: All wine seems to taste the same to me:rolleyes: maybe cause im not a big drinker |
Honey, learning about wine can take a life time. I know California wines, but Italian -- like you "nada". there are books, Wine for Dummies, etc. that make it simpler to understand. I'd suggest you start there and keep your ears open at work. Good luck. |
yikes. I knw nothing about wine either. Good luck! |

I would suggest for you to try to go to some wine tastings. However....if you don't like wine it could be a difficult journey. I do think, though, that you could benefit from some tastings. Listen to the descriptions of the wine. You don't have to like it to be able to recommend it by using the proper adjectives to describe it. I worked with a waiter onece that was a wine snob. I always hated the way he worked with folks that had no wine knowledge.......like a young man and woman on a nice date that obviously had no wine experience. He would make them go through the whole ritual. Waiting at each turn for the man to give the 'proper' response. What an idiot he was! I just gauged everything in my wine service by the 'experience' they presented to me. I had no desire to make one appear badly in front of their guest/date. He enjoyed it. Jerk that he was. |

eww i hate ppl like that. We had a couple like that in my old job as well. Thnx for the advice;) |
Some wine advise lol - As Ben Franklin said: 'In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.' In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. coli) - bacteria found in feces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop. However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting. Remember: Water = Poop, Wine = Health Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of s**t . There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service. |
HAHAHAHA OMG Villette, that was hilarious! I'm only good at opening the bottle, pouring and drinking, not really knowing about it. I did take a class in college (yes a 1 credit elective) on wine tasting. It was so very complicated and we were sloshed anyway so I don't remember much. I bet if you could find a nice wine store there may be someone there that would be willing to give you a course. Good Luck~ I think maybe I should have a glass now :) |

and COOL ON THE Class in school - I bet there was a waiting list for that class |
I am drinking a glass right now that could accurately be described as yummy! I used to waitress and wine reps would come in and give us little classes. Maybe they'll do something like that? I don't see how anyone could describe an entire wine list unless they were a sommelier or wine was a passion. One of the reps gave us each a wine wheel. It was a little like a color wheel but described the wines and it was a pretty good cheat sheet. I've probably been 0 help. I like wine quite a lot but I would not be able to describe wines from an extensive list. |
LOL thanks Vilette for a good laugh:p I found a wine tasting class, i might attend one but the manager at my job said he is going to test me on what i know, not only on wine, on the food, on the comp. etc so we'll see how i do on that lol and then ill see if i even need the class |
