Rose Bushes Hello I'm needing some help with my :rose: Rose Bushes. I don't know how many of you have them but if you do maybe you can help me. I have 29 from, bushes, climbing, :rose40: tea roses, miniature roses to the old fashion once a year bloomers, all different colors and sizes. (I'll take photos of them all when they come into bloom & post them for you all to see) I always get new rose bushes every year for Mothers Day and my Birthday. :) I am having trouble with Aphids :( since we moved to the City, I use to have trouble with Beetles and had so many Lady Bugs in the Country, but no Aphids, I know the Lady Bugs :ladybug: eat the aphids. Aphids are on my roses every single Spring, (Lived in our house here for 4 years now) we have not beetles or lady bugs here in the City. I've tried everything that you can buy at Home Depot, Walmart and every where else here in the City I can buy at, I've tried home made recipes also. Nothing is working, I fight these little critters all Spring long, drives me batty :scratchhe the only way I've found to get rid of them is smash them with my fingers and then a lot of them fall to the ground...I hate doing this every single day. But I have to in order to save my babies. I know it's nasty to do but I have to save my roses. :tongue030 Do any of you have trouble with Aphids eating your roses? They can and will destroy your little baby buds you have coming on for your roses. If you do can you please I :hands: beg of you to share how you get rid of them. PLEASEEEEEEE I don't care how stupid or crazy your ways of getting ride of them may sound I'll try anything...Trust me...I've tried some crazy things with them. I love:love: my roses, they too are my life along with my Yorkies, I always say if I die, put my Yorkies, Girls, Diet Drinks and Roses in my casket...I baby these roses as much as I do my Yorkies & Girls. I hope some of you can help me. :) Thanks, Lee |
I only have the old antique roses - Mrs. B.R. Cant - but diatomaceous earth works for me. It is completely organic, it is sea shells ground into a powder. You sprinkle it heavily on the rose bushes and as the aphids crawl through it, the sea shells cut their legs/body parts and they die. It will take a couple of days, and you will need to reapply when you begin to see them again, or after a rain. The roses are not very pretty with this white powder all over them for a day or two till it all drops/blows off. But it will do the trick, at least it works for me. Also, I think you can use Neem oil (dormant oil) but it must not be over 85 degrees because it will burn the leaves. |
I'm a landscape architecture student and I don't personally know. Buy maybe find a local reputable nursery (not a walmart or lowes) and ask to talk to a landscape architect or plant expert. At a nursery/firm I worked at they had an arborist. A horticulture person may know too! Good Luck!!! |
I know how you feel. I don't have roses but I do have a gorgeous Plum tree that is infested with aphids this year. My best friend has them all on her roses. Since they are on my tree, they are now transferring to my other plants. I have Callas and have never had a problem with them other than Japanese beetles. Now my Callas have aphids. I talked with a guy at a nursery today and he recommended that I try pamolive liquid dish detergent mixed with water....because I am too afraid of the poisions, like malathion. He said to spray the tree in the evening and to rinse it the next day. I am going to do that to all my plants. I will do the ground plants with a spray bottle and the tree with a hose that has an attachment that mixes the contents with water. I will post the results when we are done. I want it done NOW but my husband seems to be in no hurry. Maybe I will try to do it myself? |

Yes, I know that this too is a safe way to control bugs like aphids. I haven't tried it, but know that it is recommended. One caution though, the soap will burn the leaves if it is too hot, so I would put it on when it is cool, like in the evening, and wash it off early in the am the next day. |

I have not even had the exterminator over for anything since I have had her. I am too afraid. If anything happened to her I think I would just want to lay down and die. I know that sounds so over the top but it is just the way I feel. I love her sooooo much. What a crazy woman I am, eh?! |
In UK i use the washing up liquid in water and use a sprayer. |
