Any Yorkie owners with cats? As some of you know, we've been looking to add a new addition to our family. I've been wanting another Yorkie, but my husband finally came out and said he would really like a cat. Which is fine with me I guess. Anyway, we found a cat who is really great with big dogs and are pretty sure we are going to adopt her. But as I mentioned in a previous thread, Xavier is not good with any other animals so far. Do you guys think getting a cat would be a bad choice? Any advice is appreciated :) |
I have two cats and two yorkies. I got them in this order: cat (Kira), yorkie (Lacy), cat (Sophie), yorkie (Rylie). For the most part they all get along pretty well. My older cat, Kira, isn't very friendly and is pretty timid, and Lacy tends to chase her a lot. Rylie and my older cat do fine together because Rylie doesn't mess with her. Lacy and Rylie get along great! The two cats get along really well for the most part..they respect each others space. Lacy and my younger cat, Sophie, get along really well and will play some but Lacy usually gets too rough and Sophie will run off to get away from her. Rylie has gotten to where he's kind of jealous of Sophie and will run up to her and snap at her occassionally, but he doesn't do this all the time. So, like I said, they all get along well for the most part...but sometimes it's a little crazy. |
i have 2 cats and 2 yorkies as well...and no problems here. It took them about 3 months to get use to eachother tho'. And even now when the dogs bark they just run out. But otherwise they all play together and stuff. |
Keep in mind how agile cats are. They can run and jump up out of the way or stand their ground and smack the dog with a good "thump" but not using claws. I have three cats, two Yorkies and a Lhasa-poo. MacTavish, 16 month old Yorkie, puts the run on one of the cats sometimes but Matt T. Cat just runs and jumps to safety. The other two just sit down and say "you've got to be kidding". If the cat you are interested in adopting is used to dogs then I doubt you would have any problems. Initially the cat will hiss and the dog will bark but within a short time I am sure they will respect each others' space. In the last 25 years of having both cats and dogs, I have never had a problem. Best of luck! |
Even if they don't play together they will survive in the same space. Like was mentioned, it does get crazy sometimes but why else do we have our furbabies? They do entertain us.:D |
I have a cat, I had her for 9 years before the boys came along.Needless to say she was not thrilled when this happened. I also catsit my SIL cat from time to time so at any given point I can have 3 yorkies (1 is my sisters), and two cats in my house. They get along fine, my cat will tell them when she wants to be left alone, and there are also napping spots that only she can get to. |
I have a cat and 2 yorkies and they get along fine. |
I have four yorkies and a cat and foster kittens as well. My cat sometimes swats at the dogs, but most of the time she sleeps with them, grooms them and plays with them. When we have foster kittens my cat stays far away from the kittens at first but the dogs take care of the babies, grooming cleaning booties, making sure they go potty, and playing with them. |
I have a siamese cat and Zoey was the addition. No problems. At first April wasn't happy being as she and Lulu were best buds but she not accepts her and all is fine in the land. |
I had my cat about 10 years before I got my yorkie. My cat,Tigger, is getting old and "tolerates" Lily as best he can. I'm sure if I had got her when he was younger they would be the best of friends by now. The best thing I found to gurantee a happy household for all of us....a babygate between them! :p Good luck! I'm sure things will be fine! |
I got a Cat and 6 Yorkies Maxeen the Cat was the latest addition to our family and she sits every morning under the Tree with the Yorkies and hunts for Squirrels . Well she is just one of them. |
I have 3 cats who were all here before Izzy and they get a long so well together. I was worried first about Izzy and now it's the opposite..she terrorizes them to no end. Plus they are way bigger than she is....she is not even 3# and my smallest cat is 9# and my largest Maine Coon is 15#. She jumps on them and pulls their fur and wants them to chase her to no end.:D |
I have 2 bengal brothers that were here first and we just got our yorkie about 2 mths ago. Phoenix loves to jump on and chase the cats. Sometimes the cats swipe w/o claws and sometime they actually chase Phoenix lol. And Phoenix has learned to stalk the cats like they stalk him and also pounce lol. If the cats dont want to play they just jump on something and all is fine. |
I have a cat and then Britney and Brooklyn. They all get along great. We figured Britney and Brooklyn would get along with Gloria, the cat, because they are very friendly to other animals and because they both love my mom's cat. We also picked Gloria because of her outgoing personality. All three get along amazingly. They all started being friendly to one another after a day or two. Brooklyn and Gloria play, chase, and attack one another for HOURS a day. They also occasionally sleep together, especially at night time. Good luck! |
i have a cat and a yorkie and two yorkie poos, they all seem to get along well, except when the cat gets into one of his "attitude" phases..LOL. He does at times smack at the dogs, but most of the time, he ignores them. I have one that he actually will lick, like he's grooming her...and that i found strange considering he is a male cat, normally that is found with females... I guess you will just have to see how your yorkies will react with the cat. good luck!~:animal-pa |
