Wow! Looks like you had a good trip. It's great u got a chance to help these kids. I bet it meant a lot to them. I can't believe kids can teach w just a high school education.


Btw...did u say Large bugs?!?!:eek: I don't think I could do it. Yuck!

Hi Marcella. Great post. How did you get involved with the orphanage? I adopted my two boys from Guatemala. I spent a week there and then went back and spent another few days. This was with my older boy. We did not travel with our younger boy. He was escorted for us. It's very sad to see how children overseas live. I remember coming back at night from Antiqua and seeing a child about 3 yrs. old in tattered clothing, begging on the street corner at around 11pm or so at night. Hubby is a retired NY cop and seeing how the kids survive over there brought him to tears. It's very emotional visiting the orphanages etc.

I was thinking of you and wondered where you were but then I remembered that you were in D.R. Thank you for sharing your pics, I have been to DR once but only to a resort, but i know how poor it is, i went to La Romana which was 3 hours from the resort and on the way we saw tons of poor ppl on the sides of the roads and sleeping at churches, babies with no clothes or diapers. I felt so bad. I def. want to volunteer in an orphanage, I was actually doing research one time cause I reaaaaally want to volunteer in Brazil but many of the places want you to pay just to volunteer, one place wanted $2000 for 2 weeks, incredible. Anyway i found an affordable place and I am going to check it out but first I want to learn some Portuguese. It's def. amazing and culture shock. Did you have any encounters with waterbugs???? I hate them! Good thing for those nets, otherwise you would have prob. found them next to you when you woke up. lol I plan to return to D.R. one day, also my bf is Dominican so I will prob. go with him, and he tells me i will expericne the REAL dr LOL

How wonderful of you to do that and what an amazing experience! I love the pictures and I'm so glad you went :)

But we missed you and Simon missed his Layla A LOT!!

Welcome Back, Marci! I'm glad you had such a great trip. The pictures are GREAT and so is the historical information you provided. I enjoyed the "show" so much! Thanks for sharing. :)

I am sure that it feels good to be home.... I bet that Layla is REALLY HAPPY that you are back with her.

ya the bugs were intense. The first night we got there (arrived at 12:30 am) we walked into our ramada to see a HUGE cockroach on the floor... i didn' tknow they CAME that big :p and the spiders are massive.. they have like a hard shell back... bleh... i shiver just thinking about them!

Well we went as a group from Teachers college. Our university (The University of Western Ontario) has been going there for years as an alternative spring break so when we wanted to do a service learning trip we knew we would go there because of the amazing repuation they have with Western. I will be going back next year :)

sure i can post more pictures. I will have a lot more Thursday. We are compiling our pictures as a group and i'll be getting the cd of the pictures on Thursday but i'll post more of the ones i have to hold you over till then :p

well we never acutlaly KNEW the temperature. Today it is 25 (celcius) degrees here in Ontario an i find it cool.. we were talking today and it must have been around 35-38 degrees Fahrenheit. it was just HOT.. lol... the showers were cold and it was great to cool off but you got out... and you were sweating again :p

1. This is a salt flat. They put salt water in here and the sun causes the water to evaporating leaving salt. It is a major industry in Monti Cristi and much of the salt we consume comes from flats like this one.
2. This is a park is dedicated to the Mirabel Sisters. They were the fighting force to rid Treheo. If you want to see an amazing movie- In the TIme of the Butterflies is amazing. We were shown it Tuesday night to get a better understanding of the Dominican history.

1. This clock tower is a major landmark on Monti Cristi. It was designed by Gustave Eiffel and was given as a gift from France. It is supposed to kinda resemble the Eiffel tower.
