Please recommend a national animal charity I have a group of high school students who do public service projects each year. I would like to hear recommendations for a national canine or animal charity. I would have said PETA before I read some things that disturbed me recently. Any ideas? I would really appreciate your suggestions. It would certainly cut down my research time. Thanks in advance.:) |
Main Line Animal Rescue They help out a lot of puppy mills. The percentage of animals they adopt out is very high, I believe. They were also the rescue that was on the puppy mill episode of Oprah. |

You're welcome! Now that I think about it, I guess they aren't considered "national" but I still think they do a pretty good job. :) |
I don't know Judy, I can only think of the ASPCA and The Humane Society of the United States. Whatever charity the students choose, it's really nice that it will be animal related. :) |
Those are great ones. Thanks. :) |
This site evaluates charities and gives them ratings...you can click on "about us' and it tells how they rate them......there are a lot of pet charities to pick from..... Charity Navigator: Animals |
That's perfect! It's exactly what I need. Thank you. :) |
I heard about Noah's Wish during Hurricane Katrina. They go into disaster areas and take care of animals. Looks like they are very well organized and reputable. Noah's Wish Saving Animals in Disasters: Education • Rescue • Recovery |
Best Friends is a wonderful organization and I have been supporting them for over 10 years. They have a tv show called Dog town and they have been active in all animal rescue along with conservation for our wild friends. They were the first group in and the last group to leave New Orleans and they have also been one of the leading groups in working with legislations in our country. They are the organization that was behind the scene with the Michael Vick dogs and 22 of dogs are at Best Friends to be rehabilitated. Almost all of the other organizations believed the dogs should have been put down. You can read about it on their website. Their philosophy is to educate the public and they believe you can get more with honey than with violence. The magazine they produce is very well done and includes all types of animals which would interest many different people. People can also go and stay at Best Friends for a visit. Many students spend a week there is the summer helping out. Please take the time to go to their website...I think you will be impressed. Best Friends Animal Society Home Page |
I was going to say Best Friends as well. :) |

If I could start my own charity - I would want it to be in their image... |
