Has anyone installed laminate flooring themselves?? I have a 12x12 room for my dogs. I was going to have home depot install tile, they wanted $2500 (the cheapest tile). I went to lowes and got a quote for laminate, they want $2000 (and that is with a discount). Sooo, now I am thinking of doing the laminate myself. I have never done anything like this before though and I have just myself, no help. Has anyone else done it yourself? Would you recommend doing it yourself or not? I am both confused and broke! :p Please help.! |
My husband and I installed laminate flooring in our cabin and it was a challenge with 2 people...one would be hard. Now that the laminate is in here we hate it and would rather have real hard wood or carpet. I think you would be better off with a good, heavy piece of lenoleum and you could do that yourself or even have it installed for very little money. |
Thanks for the response! All the websites make it look so easy! Can you tell me what it is you don't like about it? I would love hardwood, but with my 3 dogs and a destructive 14 year old, forget about it! H.D. has $99 installation on carpet, that would be awesome but since the dogs have ruined my current carpet, that wouldnt do much for me. |
I've done it, and it wasn't that hard. Just make sure your floors are REALLY clean. I cleaned mine w/ ammonia, but didn't get it all washed off, and it reacted with the glue and the ends of pieces popped up. Also, its worth it to rent a roller to make sure the stuff is down good. |
I did mine (about the same size room) with my father. Took a whole day, but we used the floating laminate. It works well for us. I will say one thing, my Yorkie slips a lot on it, cause it has very little texture. Hope that helps :) |
I did it myself. You can check out my insane experience on my blog if you want ... (link is in my signature). Entries are in the 2007 archives, and part of the motivation to start my blog. :D I would probably do it again, but not with the same flooring manufacturer, though it has held up admirably during its first year. |
I helped my dad install laminate flooring in his livingroom. It's not a huge room but it's work. You have to clear the floor then make sure it's all nice an even..so you might need to lay down thin plywood, then lay the barrier paper then put down the flooring. You do need a good table saw because you will have to make some cuts. It wasn't that bad of work but you will need some help and tools. |

Oh brother, I laughed, I cried :p I think I need you to come install my flooring. |
we have laminate wood floor.. kevin and he brother did it themselves. |
Thanks. Appreciate the vote of confidence, but I think I'll have to pass. That's a pretty much once in a lifetime experience, I think. Or at least, I hope. :D Makes for some good stories though! I'd share a few of the final results but for some reason, the site won't load 'em. |
I am considering trying it myself in my family room and the "casual" dining area. I already installed ceramic tile in 2 bathrooms and the kitchen and still have the entryway to do. I have never installed tile before either, but got a book at home depot and learned to do it myself |
We installed it in 4 rooms, and I don't think I will do it again. It was hard with just the 2 of us. But that was years ago and now they may have made it easier:) Good luck with what ever you do:D |
2 Attachment(s) Wow! That's awesome. I wanted to try ceramic in our kitchen but decided the weight might be too much. My hat's off to you! These are my end results with the laminate. (System FINALLY decided to load.) |
Ok, decision made! I will go to the home depot, pick myself up a man, have him do it for me. Oooh, if only it were that easy! I am just irritated as home depot tile install is $10.50/ft; lowes laminate install is $2.29/ft. The tile at h.d. is $1.27/ft; the laminate at lowes is $2. (something a sq/ft). I just figured even though the laminate is more expensive, given the price of install, lowes would be half the price. More confused than ever. Thanks everyone!!!!! |
