How to remove household odors? Anyone know of any tips, remedies, or products to remove household odors? I live in an older building that was converted into apartments, have pets, cook a lot, the people upstairs cook with garlic on a DAILY basis, etc. so sometimes my apartment smells WEIRD. The smells typically aren't bad- just annoying/odd. ETA: I prefer natural products (Method is one of my favorites- although I haven't used many of their products). Also, has anyone bought any candles from this retailer? http://maximumscented.com/plugins/Mi...s/merchant.mvc |
i use baking soda on my carpet and simple green almost everywhere else. |
my mom swears that sitting a dish of vinegar out will absorb odors, but to me it just makes the room stink like vinegar. |

I just love Bed Bath and Beyond Yankee Candle electric plug-ins. At Christmas they had a cinnamon scent that I just went nuts for. They last so much longer than Glade or Wizard oil plug-ins. I think it lasted 3 months in a very large open room. With the 20% off coupon they are not a bad price. I just don't know which of the other scents to recommend. |
Since you like natural....Try combining some spices that you like in a small pan and letting them simmer on low. Add an apple, cinnamon sticks, stuff like that. Keep it in the refrigerator overnight and you can use it again the next day. Just add water to it. When it finally loses its 'scents' (:D ) throw it away and start over. |
Awesome thread with great tips! The house we are moving into has some pretty strong pet odors. (Although I have a HYPER sensitive nose) I will definitely try some of ya'lls tips! |
My new apartment smells GREAT - but then again - I just moved in :) I use reed diffusers and have one in every room - Pier 1 has the whole set up for 12 bucks and you can add decorative reeds too. The only other thing I can suggest is Fabreeze - I'm addicted to their original scent - LOVE it:thumbup: |

My mom bought an electric plug in from Bath & Body and it smells really good! I think the scent is cinnamon clove. :) |
Not natural but I love the Yankee Candle tarts. I use the tarts during the day and candles at night. The tarts are much stronger. I also have the Yankee plug in oil thingys but I always forget to buy replacements so they're usually empty. I don't think they're that great anyway. |

How long do you melt the tarts before you change it? |
You can get this odor remover in a tub called odor magnet at QVC. It remove odors as strong a pet odors and burnt popcorn. It works great I love mine |
The one thing nice about the Yankee Candle electric plug-ins is that the scent always surprises you. You can come home to a nice smell, or just anytime, the scent just pops up, and smells glorious. I wish I knew other fragrances to recommend the only place they are selling cinnamon is on e-bay, and they are getting outrageous prices for it, but I love it so much, it smells like the real thing, not "applely", like the other brands. The plug-ins are a subtle smell compared with candles. As far as the soy candles shown in your link, they are suppose to be good for not having the "soot" of regular candles, but some I purchased at Joanne's had more soot than any candle I have ever seen, and they are advertised as no soot. :( |
I use odoban you get it at sams club ,its fairly cheap and you dilute it ,I love the smell. |

Another really good strongly scented candle is Root. We don't have any stores that sell them so I always forget about them. Every once in a while I'll get lucky and find one at TJ Maxx but my mom gets them at Fresh Market in NC. They are soy or at least a soy blend and zero soot. I think they are stronger than Yankee. They also have tarts but I've never used them. |
