We out today and found 71 morels, cleaned them and they're soaking now, get ready for the feast....M'M' good! Anyone one else out there hunt them? Here's a pic of my find!:D

Oh I am so jealous!! I just had to show my hubby the picture of your bowl of them!! My mouth is just watering thinking about them! How do you make them? Fry them up with flour and butter? We probably need to be checking here to....I just said something the other day that it is time....were on in Indiana. My hubby's family has hunted for them since I've known them and so I try to too now!! I don't have as good as "eye" for them as they do though! Enjoy the morels!!

Oh my goodness.... I am salivating.
I absolutely adore mushrooms of any kind and they are not easy to come by here, except in the grocery store and those are your every day white. I remember going mushroom picking with my dad when I was little and those were to die for.
Yesterday, for the very first time, I actually saw some really wild mushrooms in a new Market that just opened up called Whole Foods and they had all kinds of wild mushrooms including my favorite .... Chanterelles, but they were asking 29.99 a lb!!!!

That's them. My mom made them once a very long time ago but we couldn't remember what they were called. Thanks!

Yep, it is the season, I think they will probably be ready there in a couple more nice days! I first bread mine with egg and flour, then fry them in butter. The first batch is always the best.:) I just started hunting them myself about 3 years ago and have gotten pretty good sighting them now, so hang in there you will get better! :D

I am so jealous, I can find them around Fairview, not here though.
I think my mom did them with just a light coat of flour then deep fried.
I love those little rolly polly houses!!!

For those out there that don't know, soak them in a little dilute salt water first, it kills the renters.

WOW....$29.99 a pound, I love the Chanterelles too. I seen someone on the morel mushroom site wanting to sell morels for $25.00 a pound. Last year we had a good season, so I battered mine, laid them on a cookie sheet and froze them, then put them in ziploc freezer bags. I deep fried them when we wanted to have a mess. So far that is the best way I have found to preserve them. :)

up around fairview i noticed that a few of them have rolly polly's inside( how did they get in there??) Mom soaks them and cuts them in half then fries them.

oh:idontknow I have never gotten one with a rolly polly, but maybe around the soil the stem may have had a crack in it???? I have seen ants though! I do the same as your mom, I first clean the outside, cut them in half, make sure they are clean in the middle and soak them in the salt water! Might sound bad but nothing worse than picking veggies from your garden!:D

exactly. I have no problems with a little dirt or grit.

OmG- I love them- to early here! When I lived in Iowa- I saw more up there than I had ever seen One guy told me he found 96 pounds of them!
I love them! I can't seem to find them around here any more!!!So I probably wont get any this year!! Darn

Do they taste like white mushrooms? They are interesting looking...sort of spongy.

No, the flavor is so much better than the white caps, they have a taste of their own, oh and yes they look like a sponge and are shaped like a Christmas tree. I love to eat them, but the hunt is the best!:thumbup:

OMG those look sooo good YUMMY.
We usually do not have them coming in for a few weeks.I cant wait!!!!:D :D
