What are your opinions on this? A friend sent this to me...for an "open discussion" w/ my daughter (for some school stuff)..... Quote:
THANKS! http://www.storyofstuff.com/ |
Inserting a lot of personal political views in my opinion. But whether you have the same or different view, I imagine that it could be a basis for discussion with your child. |
I didn't watch the whole thing...about 10 min worth. I has a not-so-subtle agenda. (big business =greed, making a profit is shameful, government is there to take care of us...) Those are opinions presented in a way that makes them appear to be facts. I looked at the credits and they all appear to have some gain by the distribution of this media. If it is presented as a classroom discussion lead by a teacher subscribing to this philosophy then the opportunity for opposing viewpoints is greatly diminished. |
Oh, boy... I have a bunch of problems with that video. It is clearly a political infomercial...typical "the Govt's job is to take care of us" and "the U.S. is soooo BAD!" Be so beware of this movement...it's not good for our kids. Saying that, I do recycle and compost. I teach my kids by example, not by political movement videos. I would be very upset if a teacher showed this to my kids at school... |
Oh, and another thing... The govt. SHOULD be smaller than business!!!! (should be MUCH smaller) yikes!!! |
Well my curiosity is piqued. I'll check it out tomorrow. What did you think Jenn? We're very similar in demographics (age, kids, etc). |

It was really drawn out...and it did have some good points, but not all! Then, we watched it together, but she got rather bored w/ it and didn't really seem to "care" for the whole speech....She understands about only buying what is really needed (even though, in this society, how many people really do that), so the concept of we buy what we are told to buy (all that stuff we see on tv, etc is soo true).....anyway....I thought it was a bit "much" and above what most of our children would really want/need to see. |

I totally forgot to watch it. Sounds like if nothing else it was conversation starter which is always a good thing. |

I also agree it may be a good conversation starter. It's nice to see your kids views on political topics. I may not agree with all that lady was saying but I know my son will grow up to be his own self and I want him to believe what he wants to believe not what mom and dad does. I'd show it to her then maybe show her someones complete opposite view and debate, see how she views it. :) |
The problem I have with this type of spiel is that it is presented without opposing views. It is presented as the truth. I've heard teachers speak about such issues and the students accept it having no idea that there are other views. |
