Who has talents of decorating...ie...room colors I need help.....and I am in the WORST mood today......let me tell you why.....well.....almost why...partly is hormonal...lol...the other part is.....I need decorating advice....yes....dont laugh... We bought this house last July. The interior was painted "southwestern" colors.... Kitchen---rust Master- Cinnimmon Dining room.....off white, neutral.... LR Same off white Foyer same white... BR 1 Green Br2 Rust...same as kitchen Hallway....off white Well, hubby likes it....why??? He does not have to paint! I hate it.....and it was going to be 3000 to hire a painter.... So, I have so much crap that I could probably make my stuff look OK in these colors .... but, I DONT LIKE IT! I am a winter color person....a Sagitarrius...vibrant....fun..... but. have traditional furniture...because I AM OLD! So, I love elegant, toiles, velvet...etc....I like florals, even though I am the only girl....besides Paddy of course... Ok....so I hired a "guy"from the paint store...a decorator if you will......he gave me a list.....of his choices...not working with my stuff.....and I lost the list....and really would like to use my current furniture.... I am sooooooooooooooooo stressed about this.....I just want my house to look nice, elegant......neat....and current......you know what I mean..?????? Yes.....I told you....I am really not doing well today.......geez...maybe I need to to....ummmmmmmmm ....something..... Any advice...would be helpful......you guys are so much better at this than I am.... Oh yea.....I will have to do this my self....because I dont have 3000 to hire a painter...besides, that would dip into my next Yorkie fund...LOL.... Color advice.........oh yea.....I have hardwood floors and 9 ft ceilings...with white trim.........the house is traditional brick, one level.... I promise, i am not crazy....just a bit overwhelmed..... Shirley |
Sorry...forgot to add.. All the rooms colors are nuts.....or spices.... Nutmeg, Cinnimon..... on and on.....the previous owner was a "horse" person......so he liked southwestern colors...... |
No help because I suck. But I just wanted to give you a virtual hug. Don't you just love those pms days when you feel like cleaning and revamping everything under the sun...lol. |
LOL !!! Po thang ! I love contemporary stuff - so my colors are silver - black - mauve & pale blue - with a little burgandy thrown in - but then again - I got my taste from my husband with these colors I have to admit - my new apartment is looking really REALLY good..... good luck - maybe you could do a virtual tour at one of the online paint stores then paint your rooms YOURSELF - that saves the crazy prices painters charge and you can pick and choose exactly what you want and do it in stages |
When we bought a brand new home (watched it being built too) to move into, all the walls were white so I started looking thru a zillion homes magazines. When I had ideas of colors I like, I went to Home Depot and picked up a LOT of color samples and taped them to each room. I think I had about 4 different colors per room. When I had finally reached my decision (after a couple of weeks), I bought the paint and got to work. (by myself since my husband was in Alaska for 8 weeks). We then decided we like the area we live in best so we put the new house on the market. Everyone that looked at the house LOVED the colors I chose. So you see, just take your time and just get some ideas in LOTS of magazines. ;) |
I am a floral designer and do some interior design. Some of my best friends are interior designers, too. In some really high end design stores. Here is what I suggest to you first: Take your time....very important. It is awful to live with decisions made in haste. Go to Lowes (preferably), Home Depot or someplace like that. In the paint department you will find paint chips. Select some colors you like. Get three of each hue. Dark, medium, light. Tape them in a composition book, one hue (three choices) to each page. Note why you like each one and how you think it would go with your existing furniture, window treatments, etc. Give yourself some time to analyze this information. I recommend that you choose some pretty neutral colors...colors that you can build 'your look' around once you ahve decided what you want 'your look' to be........ For example, you can pick a color from your couch or loveseat that doesn't really 'stand out' and that would bring that particular color more forward. Once you have decided on your hues, it will be easier from there. Can you take pictures of what you have now? You do know that if the colors in existence are very strong colors, you will have to paint over them with primer (like KILZ) so they won't show through your new colors? Unless the new colors are darker, of course, but it doesn't sound like you would want to go darker. All the best in your new creative endeavor!! |

Will you come to my house and help me decide! I hear you...I am in the same boat....but we built this house...and I am ready for some actual colors on the wall...not off white! |

Wow! Great advice!!!! |
Start with the color of your current furniture and work from there. Decide if you want like colors or contrasting colors. Just about anything looks good with wood floors. It might be helpful to post photos of your furniture also. |

Okl...so what colors did you choose??? Quote:
Believe it or not...I have been working on this for 9 months....and I swear I need to move out and let someone else decorate....and I swear I will like it .....LOL.... So you think I could paint the rooms and not screw it up????? I am so not a painter.....LOL |
OMG...... I cannot take pics of my house...then you Quote:
will really see, how uncreative I am........and a pack rat at that!!! |
Shirly when I was growing up everyone wallpapered. then as i got a little older, those awful colors of green and gold what ever they called came out. i think it was dusty pink, harvest gold and green something or other. my mother went wild. Colored walls get old real real fast. At least to me. I have ALWAYS had off white in my house. I am thinking (just a little) that when I paint my rooms this spring, I would like to use colors again but I am scared half to death because i do not paint either. hubby always did that but now he us unable to do it. I DO NOT want topaint something beige or some other color and have to re-do it in a month cause I hate it. I LOVE chocolate brown and have that color drapes in my yorkie room that used to be my living room. I have been thinking about using some shade of light brown or tan on the walls and putting a border at the top. But then again, I think I will stay with off white. What's a girl to do? |

Right now, I have 8 different paint samples hanging on the wall of my living room, just to see which color "grabs" me.... I have also done as someone above and painted a big piece of cardboard and tacked it to the wall(good thing cuz I tired of that color easily) Popular colors are of the tan/taupe family, they go with most things... use the lightest color in your furniture, or your bed coverings, just stay in a neutral color hue.. you will do fine, Painters tape works wonders! Good Luck! d |
Ok..... Lets see.....in the Living room..... I have green leather....dark walnut wood , floors are hickory....I do have a dark deep red oriental rug....but I can switch that out do a lighter rug, as I have several......I just love the shade....deep cranberry.....Walls are now that light offwhite/tan color...neutral... Kitchen, butts up to the LR(kitchen is rust)now....which I hate.....so colors would have to compliment.......I have a black table ...ie hitchcock chairs..... counter has black specks...hope to change out to granite.... next summer hopefully....cabinets are natural hickory to match the floor....I do not have drapes....since I cannot figure out what to put up on any of my windows... Master butts up to kitchen....and master is the cinn color. I have a light floral oriental rug in the Bedroom.....dark furniture.....My bed covers are negotiable, but right now I have a checked cinn dustruffle.....the only one I could find that was long enough....... Dining room.....is light walls....in the middle of adding french doors, so the color is not a problem in here as when the doors go in....the color can change...but it is right next to the master.....and the kitchen so I am sure the three will need to complement each other... And the boys rooms are at the other end of the house with the LR dividing the,.....and if I can the LR, I am sure I will need to make sure that their rooms complement on the other side of the house.... I am so confused...and so wanting to just move out.....because I cannot get my sh-- together.....and decorate my darn house..... Can you tell, I just let things eat at me...until.....I just........go out of town to get away from the decisions.....LOL I have floral/oriental rugs in the larger rooms...as I do not like carpet.....but love my rugs...they are Karastan....so if you know that look....it is really traditional......but lots of different colors.... |
Did you know??? if you have a comforter or a throw pillow or anything you like the colors in, you can go to to hardware store and they can match the color by computer so you can get the colors to match you furniture, cutains, comforter, anything you like and want to work with in your home. I learned the hard way that you should never pick colors when you are stressed, upset, or emotional. I picked this blue that looked great on paper, horrible on the walls, when I was upset about something. (THe painter was coming the next day) We had to repaint it looked so bad! Just remember everything looks DARKER on the wall then you think it will.... Paint a patch on the wall... let it dry, and look at it every hour or so all day long, because the light in a room changes as the day goes by.... what looks great in the morning may look to dark in the afternoon! |

What I'm thinking for your Dining room kitchen and living room would be Ralph Lauren's Antique Bone ww44, and for the master bedroom, Ralph Lauren's Flour Sack White ww23. For a "special" bedroom for quest's a little girl or the like, check out Ralph Lauren's Spring Clover ww08. It's just simply stunning!!! I painted the master bath in the new house with Ralph Lauren's Blue-Green GH81. You would not believe how beautiful this looks!! Now I'm in the mood to do some painting again. Somebody help me!!! |
You are so sweet.... Quote:

Would you like to come visit...LOL |
