Tivo vs Directv? We have had Tivo for a few years and love it, but we just bought a 46' LCD tv and found out that we have to purchase a new Tivo HD DVR. So now we are exploring DirectTV's HD DVR compared to Tivo. We know we love Tivo, but we do not have any experience with DirectTv.:confuse2: Looking for any pros or cons?? We are especially interested in how easy it is to use and maneuver around, because Tivo is really simple! Thanks! |
We just got our direct tv and dvr hooked up after Christmas. I still don't understand it all but the dvr is really easy to use. The only thing that I don't like about it is, you can't record without commercials and the fast forward goes in second(s) increments, not commercial to commercial. But other than that, I love being able to record shows that I wouldn't otherwise be able to watch. |
I had a terrible experience with DirecTV. They did not tell me when I signed up that you have to pay extra for a service plan. A day after my dish warranty expired, my service went down. I was told it would cost $50 + parts for a service call, but if I want to sign up for a service plan they would be happy to do it for something like $10/month and a two year commitment to stay with the service. I also had a lot of problems with the installation that took months to resolve. Save your time, money and stress level and stick with cable. My local cable company offers a DVR service for about $5 a month and I love it. Very easy to use and no hassles, no commitments. |

One of the reasons we are looking at Directv is because you get alot more stations in HD than you get with just the local cable company! This all starts to get so confusing! Thanks for the info! |
We have had direct tv for about 5-6 yrs now. I just got the DVR in the last 6 months now. We love it! I do have the service plan and have had it out to our house twice to fix problems. I think it is worth it! One thing I like is...we live on the West Coast. We get the NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox east and west coast channels. I can watch something that usually comes on at 8:00 at 5:00. I love this feature! (we do pay extra for that...but worth it as well.) It does seem to keep adding up...but hey...oh well, at least we are home with the furbut! LOL Back to the service plan.....I have stoped/dropped it for a few months (during the summer) then I add it again before winter (when most problems occur) In a nut shell, we have been very happy with the customer service and also the quality of picture of direct TV! |

One thing I'm wondering about with Directv, do you have to buy each receiver or DVR if you want the cable for multiple tvs in the house or do you just pay like $6 monthly for each one after the purchase of the first? It's kind of confusing on their site, it looks like you have to pay $100 for each receiver! We have like 5 tvs and right now we pay just a monthly fee for boxes with our cable! That is nice since you live on the west coast to have the option of watchin shows earlier! |
Using the DVR is easy on either syste. I had directv but opted to go to dishnetwork this time around. They charge way less. Directv charges for every dang thing. I have four tv's in the house with dish on each one..two have dvr and the other two in the kids rooms don't (they dont' need it) and I pay with tax $64.99 ...we have tons of channels. With directv I was paying $130 a month for the same thing. If I had to choose between them again I would still pick dishnetwork. |
Well I'm a TIVO LOVER!!!..lol...we have had TIVO since 2003 and just this year we got our HD TV and we got our new TIVO HD recorder - as a matter of fact we have two TIVO's in our house. I love it and can't say enough about it. We don't have Dish or any other satellite service so I can't comment on that. Though we did try our cable DVR for awhile and went back to our TIVO. :D |

Do you have HD access and HD DVRs? |
I have both and if I could I would only have the Tivo. It works so much better!! |

We are thinking since so much money was spent on the HD TV, it would be nice to have as many HD channels as possible. The upfront costs with the satellite are a big concern though! We have two Tivo boxes right now too! |

I don't think the monthly costs will be a whole lot different with Directv, it will be higher, but we would have more channels and alot more HD channels. |
