Hmmm Corned beef didn't turn out Well i decided to make corned beef and cabbage for the first time today. What is the best way to cook it? It turned out tough and chewy. |
I'm not sure I'm the best to give advice on this but I'll try. I'm cooking it tomorrow but in the crockpot. I think it's best to cook it slowly over time but I think sometimes it can have a lot of fat in it which will make it tough too. Sorry it didn't turn out so well. Wish me luck with mine tomorrow! |
1 medium onion, cut into wedges 4 medium potatoes, peeled and quartered 1 pound baby carrots 3 cups water 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 bay leaf 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 1/2 pounds corned beef brisket with spice packet, cut in half 1 small head cabbage, cut into wedges Place the onion, potatoes and carrots in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Combine water, garlic, bay leaf, sugar, vinegar, pepper and contents of spice packet; pour over the vegetables. Top with brisket and cabbage. Cover and cook on low for 8-9 hours or until the meat and vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaf before serving |
I've never see a spice packet sold with beef brisket. Where did you get that, and what is it exactly? I'd like to try your recipe, but don't want to if I can't get the spice packet. |
I started looking for corned beef brisket recipes to see if they called for the spice packet and one did. ;) This sounds like a great recipe: http://www.landolakes.com/mealIdeas/...?RecipeID=7650 |
the spice packet comes with ours at our grocery store |

I have found the best way to insure Corned Beef turns out tender is to start out with a very good quality, such as Harrington's. Then, buy a very good quality slow cooker such as the Cuisinart 4 qt. I cook my corned beef and just the carrots in the slow cooker. I sauté the cabbage and sweet onion in butter separately in a large skillet. Serve it with Irish Soda Bread & Kerry Gold Irish Butter. Turns out great, year after year. Sheila |

My grandmother "browns" hers in an cast iron skillet and then puts it in a roasting pan in the oven. I am of now help because I do not know for how long or what else she puts in it. I am sure she puts in it a low heat oven though because hers always comes out juicy and fork tender! The crockpot would probably work well for this...I know I do my roasts in the crockpot and they always turn out juicy and fork tender! Yummmm:dribble: you are making me hungry!!! |
the spice packs are sold in the isle with the taco seasoning, spagatti , lasagne and those packets they usually cost under 1 dollar. |
THanks ladies! The package said to BOIL it! So i did:rolleyes: I bought two in case the first didn't turn out LOL I figured hubby could eat it on a sandwich if it didn't turn out too well. I'm going to dig out the crock pot and try it again tomorrow. I'm trying to learn how to cook new things. I was never much of a meat eater growing up so I've never wanted to learn how to cook with the crock pot or how to roast things.:p |

cloe and dj if it seemed tough it may have been the way you were cutting it. I cook one many years ago that was tough as nails but my Dad showed me if you cut it on the other side it was really tender. try it! |
Jodie, I am sorry your corned beef didn't turn out as well as you expected it to. When I fix a corned beef I generally cook them in the crockpot on low for 8 - 12 hours and add the cabbage, carrots, onions and potatoes a couple of hours before I plan to serve it. I always use the little spice packet that comes with it. Margaritaville is exactly right about the way you cut it. You cut corned beef briskets across the grain of the meat rather than with the grain. Now my bad.... tomorrow is St. Paddy's day and I totally forgot to buy my Corned Beef!!!! I guess a trip to Kroger is in my future for tomorrow morning. |
