I feel sick to my stomach and guilty!PLEASE READ MAY BE IMPORTANT Two nights ago I posted a warning I had received from my vet, and the post disappeared, it was late so I didn't repost it. He had phoned me to cancel the appointment I had for yesterday to have CoCo's teeth cleaned as he was worried as they were having huge problems with the anesthesia they were using. He felt as she was small, he didn't want to take the chance and it wasn't life or death surgery. I never thought it might have any relevance to you guys in the States, but wanted to warn fellow South Africans on YT to question their vet before having anesthetics done on their pets. Now I have just read about Skoshi passing away this morning:cry: and now I feel so bad! What if it is the same anesthetic that is causing problems here?? Oh God, I feel sick. I am so sorry I didn't repost the thread.. I am going to phone him in the morning and ask him where it is made, here or somewhere else. If anyone is having a procedure done... please check to see if your vet is aware of any problems. I am so sorry if I could have warned you guys earlier. Sheilagh |
Sheilagh, please don't feel bad. I have never heard of that but doesn't mean much since Murfee hasn't had anesthesia since he was a baby and was neutered. That was way before I got on YT so didn't know the dangers. Honey, I don't think you sleep enough anyway so know you were tired. I count up the hours when I see you on at night and know it it VERY late where you are and then boom there you are again in the morning when I get on. Please don't feel guilty. We all know that you are one of the sweetest people on here. |
Thank you so much for posting this but please go easy on yourself. Skoshi's was very likely a different kind, especially if the vet used an injectable first... |
 Wow, Sheilagh!! That's a scary thing. I'll be so interested to know what you find out about this from your Vet. I know, it was so, so sad about Skoshi. |
Sheilagh, meant to add that you have no reason to feel guilty. I doubt very seriously that it was the same anesthesia. It's just wonderful that you care so much!! You're such a good person. |
Thank you for making me feel better, I can't wait to speak to my vet tomorrow. All he said was that the usual ones they used were out of stock and wouldn't be available for a while and the new one was suspect. The animals they had been operating on had not been coming around properly for up to 24 hours, and were having other bad reactions. He rescheduled CoCo for about 10 days time. Think I'm going to put it off even longer. I am so sad about Skoshi, she was one of those babies that we got to "know" Sheilagh |
I'm glad that you have such a careful and caring Vet. Don't blame you for wanting to wait now! |
I got dh to phone him this morning...I was to scared of what he might say.. well it turns out the product is imported, there is nothing wrong with the product, it is just different, and the anesthetists have been having problems getting the right amounts/dosages?. They lost a St. Bernard ( he didn't tell me this) and are going all out to solve the problem. He(the vet) is a very close friend of ours, and said there is no way he would take the chance with CoCo until the anesthetists are on track. I guess there is no way we will know with Skoshi unless they do a post mortem on him. I am going to wait a VERY long time to get my baby's teeth cleaned! I think I will get dh to hold her and try to do it myself. I see a lot of people have looked at this thread, and if nothing else they will have made a mental note of it. Patty - yep, you are right, when dh is away on business I sit here till the wee hours. Sheilagh |
so sad for TxGurl06 It was so sad to hear about Skoshi, and it is a good thing for you to post this so that we DO question our vets. My heart goes out to TxGurl06, what a horror for her to be going through. So sad. We all worry when we bring our babies in for neutering, but who saw this coming? I hope he is over the rainbow bridge playing with all our other poor lost babies. |
Oh Sheilagh please don't blame yourself for not reposting...and yes our YT family is so sad at this time. You are posting now and like you said look at all the people that have posted and have read this. We all know the dangers of putting our little ones under for any type of surgery but you hope and pray that nothing happens. I'm sure by you posting this someone else's baby is going to be safe just by asking their vet. :( :( :( |
how sweet of you to be so concerned. I've been in that place on YT where I am so exhausted & I have great intentions of doing something important & I'm falling asleep at the computer. YT is truly a place for us to learn from one another - this thread may make a difference for so many others. You may have not have saved little Skoshi, but your message may make a difference for someone else. Actually, I adopted my 2 when they were 2 & already spayed/neutered, so I've always wondered why do so many fuss about these surgeries - I've had Bichons & cats go thru it. But these 2 threads have taught me something. The other reason not to fault yourself about Skoshi, is that I had checked last night to see when she had last been on YT -- I haven't been on much this week & I thought maybe she had posted a thread about being worried about the surgery, but I discovered she hadn't been on YT in weeks, so you see dear Sheilagh, you couldn't have saved sweet Skoshi. For your little one with the bad teeth, have you tried Petzlife? Bubba's teeth were looking at cleaning & I've been trying Petzlife & my vet said bully sticks would help. Bubba is not a chewer that is one reason the vet said he has teeth that need to be cleaned, but I finally got him to chew the bully stick - he loves the one that Roxy starts  - also, I have used sweet potato chews I think these have helped along with N-Bone Pearly Whites http://www.vetamerica.com/index.asp?...OD&ProdID=3215 Hugs to you for being so concerned about all of us & our furbabies |
You have all made me feel so much better.. especially Yorkiesmiles.. I never thought about her not being on here for ages. You're right, she wouldn't have seen the thread anyway. Phew.. that made me feel a whole lot better. I guess I got my knickers in a knot when I first posted, but it was such a co-incidence. Thank you all for all the kind things you have said. Yorkies have been my passion for 30 years and I care about all of them, and have come to care for their owners on here too. Sheilagh |
Sheilagh, it is so like you to be concerned that somehow you didn't prevent something. I understand how you could feel let-down, as it was such a coincidence. But, really, there's no way any of us could have known. I mean, there are so many anesthesias, and our babies are so very small.... I'm glad you feel better. hugs, a |
I'm so sad about Skoshi and about the scare you had and about the St Bernard they lost..... But the thing that I got out of this thread...... We take our babies to vet with a bit of trepidation each time (although I try not to get myself all upset over something that is deemed safe but with risks). BUT we feel a little bit guilty for feeling that way and not trusting our long-time family vet. But there is no reason not to ask "have you been having any issues with the anesthesia/this procedure/complications" lately?" Or "when's the last time you did this procedure/how are they doing?" This goes for both our human doctors and our vets. It's not being mistrusting, but it truly could help a vet put a puzzle together. Thanks for the reminder. |
