That is what we do when we go out of town.
Depending on where you go in Mexico, I think they would be better off at home in familiar surroundings.
My sister in law & her husband were in Mexico at Christmas and were pulled over by some renegade cops wanting money from them for being rich american tourists. They were so scared they never left the resort they stayed at for the rest of their vacation.

Yes it's really dangerous there and depending on what part you stay at, I wouldn't take the dogs. People, kids, animals get kidnapped, killed all the time. I wouldn't risk it.

Actually it takes about the same amount of time to walk to the high school from our house as it does to drive to the University... 5 minutes or less. Too bad she's under 18, otherwise we would LOVE to have Megan come puppy/house sit!!

I don't want to scare you with this post, but I just want to state the facts.

I know of a couple who went to Mexico for business.. They weren't staying long either.. They had 2 english bulldogs and took them to the vet.. The dogs got "stolen" out of the vet office during "lunch hours" and they never got them back..

I don't think I could ever take my babies anywhere that I'm not familiar with...

Thats a great opportunity!! I wish my college offered something like that!

I've been to Mexico before, have friends there, and really enjoyed the time I spent in the country. I never saw or even heard of anyone committing any crime while I was there. I'm sure crime does happen, as that is part of human nature, but terrible things happen right here in the US as well--as you can see by any news broadcast in practically any town or city. When I was in Mexico, I was treated with utmost respect and even acquired an "adopted family".

We often hear horror stories about kidnappings or bad vet experiences here in the US as well.

So I've been thinking about this all night. (I had a hard time sleeping.) I just don't think I could leave them, especially Maddie. I'm trying to convince Brendon to go and let me stay home to take care of the puppies. First of all, his Spanish is MUCH better than mine. Secondly, the credits would be enough for him to officially have Spanish as a minor. Third, he knows the professor very well and she really wants him to go. Me, it's not so important.

Anyway, I think that would be the best solution if I can just convince him to go without me.

Angie, are you sure you want to do this? I really think Maddie would be OK as long as she's comfortable with the people she's staying with. I really wish that there was a way that you'd feel comfortable going, because this is such an incredible opportunity. I'm sending you hugs!

This one is a hard one. Make a list of the pros and cons, it still won't be easy, but it might help. Hang in there Angie, things will work out, they always do;)

Ok well good luck whatever you decide. I'm sure it will be the right decision. :) I also have to travel in the future and will be in the same shoes as you, but im not sure yet what we will do with the dogs, whether they will come with us or stay with my parents.

What part of Mexico are you all going to?
It would be in Chihuahua City, Chihuahua which is Northern Mexico. The city is 4 hours by car from El Paso, TX.
