Business advice When we move this May I am going to stop grooming dogs for awhile. I'm only going to groom for family and friends. I don't want to send my son to daycare and I also don't want to leave Tilly home. Tilly has never really been alone. If I go out to groom, my mom comes over to watch both her and my son. I really like the flexibility of owning my own business, I also love having a little extra fun money coming in. I'd love to turn a hobby into a business but not sure what I want to do. I'd love to do something with animals, as sometimes they are much much better to deal with than people ;) . I'd like something where I can take my children with me, both skin and fur. Any ideas???? I just need some guidance. |
Could you maybe dedicate some space and do the grooming right in your own home? |
Well, I can tell you what my husband and I are doing - we decided to start our pet photography business with two other people around Thanksgiving last year. We both work full time, but the business is really taking off and is looking very promising. Right now, we are working out of our office in our apartment. We decided that once we have to work our regular jobs around our business, we are going to quit our jobs and work on the business full time. That probably didn't help you very much, but you're right - its very nice to be able to do what you want when you want and have your kids close to you all the time. You have to do whatever is right for you, but if you don't decide to run your own business, you'll always wonder what it would be like if you did. Since you love doing it part time, why not do it full time and make some serious cash while you're at it? You mentioned that you are moving in May -- have you already found a house? Maybe you could try working out of a room in your house. That's not uncommon, and if I'm thinking right, your house could be a tax write off as a business expense if you do it that way. I don't know how much they charge, but several places around here own their own grooming business inside of a vet's office. You might want to try something like that. Whatever you decide to do, good luck in your endeavors. :D |

You may need to apply for a business license in the county or city in which you will be doing business. You will either be required to charge taxes or pay taxes or none depending on where you live and/or where you will be operating your business from. These are all the legalities you need to consider, because this may help you decide what you want to do or DON'T want to do pending the start up costs. |
Oh okay -- I didn't know for sure since I don't own a home, it was just a thought. Good advice though. I must have misunderstood about what she was saying as a hobby. I thought she meant right now she is a hobbyist, but wanted to start a business. Anywho - good luck to you anyway :D |

Yes, Good luck on the business, because doing something you get great joy from and allows you to have time with your skin and fur kids is the ultimate in "employment"! :D |
Thanks for all of the advice. I currently do own a mobile dog grooming business. It would be really hard to open up a grooming shop, even in my home, because I don't think I could watch the dogs and my kids. Tilly went to a groomer for a short time that had both her very young children and at least 2 dogs there and I was always so scared that she would have to run in the house for something (her shop was an add on to her garage) then one day when mom and I were backing out we saw her leave her shop and go in her house, I really hope she put the girls in a crate. It just looked so unprofessional with her having her kids there. Also, she was getting stressed and started treating us like dirt, so we took our business elsewhere. That's when I decided to take classes and then start my own business. HeHe I hope that was more clear as I wasn't very clear in the first post. |
