Drying clothes
 
We had a really old dryer and it took FOREVER to dry our clothes. It took about 3 1/2 hours to dry a load of towels and about 2 hours to dry regular shirts and pants. I know it isn't suppose to take that long so we bought a newer used dryer and it's on it's second time through the heavy cycle. Is this normal? Maybe I'm impatient but I hate waiting between loads. I'd have my laundry done so much faster with a faster dryer. :rolleyes:

I know it's a pain in the a**, but I'd just put in smaller loads. It takes our dryer about 90 minutes to get pants dry. So if I put one less pair in, I can get them done in just over an hour. Just depends on how much a hurry you are in...

Our old dryer was just getting worse and worse. LOL I hope this "new" dyer does a little better for us. I don't think it could be much worse. :)

Is the vent thing clean? I clean mine after every load of two.

I'm trying to think when Mom replaced out dryer.. maybe 5-6 yrs ago. Anyway, I can throw 10-15 shirts in it, a couple PJpants, and a couple jeans and everything is dry in less than an hour!

On our dryer a load of towels usually takes right at 60 mins (unless someone forgot to clean the lint trap!)

Yeah, I'm constantly cleaning it. My mom always got after me when I lived at home about checking it. It was just super old. I'd love to have a front loader but they are expensive.

That would be so nice. What kind do you guys have?

My husband is always hearing little tips to better my life:rolleyes: , on the radio while he's driving to substations during work. So his "tip of the day" last week was, "when drying clothes, throw in a clean dry towel with the load and it will cut the drying time in half". You might want to try it, although I haven't yet.

Our washer is a Kenmore and our dryer now is Kitchenaid. The really old slow one was a Whirlpool.

I do that sometimes. It absorbs the moisture from the wet load in the first half of the cycle, and then it all dries in the second half. Just a little quicker, though.

Even if the lint trap is clean, when a dryer is more than a few years old, you need to clear the ENTIRE PATH between the lint trap and the outdoors (or wherever your dryer vents) To do that you actually have to take the back off the dryer and you will findthe "shoot" that is connected to the dryer vent hose. That "shoot has a cover on it held in place with screws... some you need to take the entire shoot out and clear all the debris. You will be surprized AT what gets past the lint trap. I found pretty close to $25 dollars in bills and change doing this one time. Your dyer will work much better after cleaning it out

That's what I was going to suggest. It makes a huge difference.
Also, wash the lint trap. The chemicals from dryer sheets cause a film that blocks the air.

LOL, I was gonna say the same thing. It happened to us. The clothes were taking for ever to dry. So I went out side to look at the vent and it was cloged with lint. We made the mistake of putting vent cover on with slits in it. So I sniped them out and works wonderful.

They have lots of problems with those too..I have a kenmore set I've had for a few years, and have never had a bit of problems with them, spent $700 for the set new..Now, my Mom bought a new set about 3-4 years ago, cost her over $2000 and she's had nothing but problems with hers...My jeans, etc are dry in less than an hour

Takes my dryer about an hour to do a load, and I have an oversized washer so my loads for the dryer are oversized. i think they are maytag washer and dryer, nothing fancy, they came with the house actually but I do like how fast they are! I can do 3 loads of laundry from start to finish in about 4 hours! :)

Great advice! We bought a new dryer because our old one was taking too long to dry,well our new one did too. My husband did this and it started dryer alot faster.We probably didn't really need a new dryer. Have your husband do this,also make sure your vent hose isn't in a bind, make sure you don't over load it,the clothes should be able to tumble freely. You will save more time and money by doing average size loads.
Also the towel trick works great for small loads.

Wow, I like that tip. We got a new washer and dryer last year, not real expensive pair, but my load in my old and new dryers were very quick. However, I only was or two, and my larger loads are not real big.:)

Mine takes 40 to 50 minutes to dry a full load. Of anything. Towels, jeans, clothing, etc. never more than an hour. My dryer is electric and ... hmmm, (counting in my head), 23 years old. WOW!! It is a General Electric brand.

It may be your WASHER that is contributing to the dryer problem.

I learned this a few years ago when my dryer was taking forever to dry my clothes. I was on the verge of getting a new dryer, when my washer completely quit and I had to get a new washer. I wanted to get a new dryer at the same time, but couldn't afford it.

Wouldn't you know it - when I got the new washer, the dryer started working better. WHO KNEW???

It was because my old washer was not spinning the clothes well enough and they were too wet when I put them in the dryer.

My daughter had the same problem and couldn't afford to get a new washer, so she would spin her clothes twice and it helped the dryer problem.

I know that putting a dry towel in the dryer with wet clothes really helps, but you might try spinning the clothes in the washer twice.

Yeah, our washer isn't very old. We bought it new probably 4 months ago. It does the same thing with this washer and the old one we had. :( I use the 2nd spin on my washer too. It's just I always get stuck with junk. LOL I told hubby lets resale this used one and buy a nicer dryer. He is so tight it's pathetic.
