California Homes...HGTV I watch HGTV a lot and often they are trying to sell homes in California. Clive (the host) will say something like..."The Joneses would like to sell their 1,100 sq. ft. home. Similar homes in the neighborhood are selling for $700k to $800k".   And a lot of times, they're not even pretty! How can anyone afford to live there?? Is everyone rich???? LOL!! |
 LOL I'm beginning to think I really can't afford to live here! Its pretty bad! I think being from California all my life, you get "used" to the high cost of living and really don't realize what a HUGE difference it is in other nearby states...Right now with the horrible market, our second home, approx 1300 sq ft, is probably only worth 550k though. |
Aww man, tell me about it! I watch these shows too and a couple days ago I was watching one that had a house that was only 1000 square feet and it was selling for 8-900K. WHAT? In my area of Texas, an approx. 2500 sq. ft house would be maybe $250,000. A $900,000 house here would more likely be about 5000 sq. ft.! When we sold our 1400 sq. ft. house a few years ago to build our bigger one, it sold for $114,000. Huge difference! I have to keep telling myself that people that live in those pricier areas make more in salary than we do so I guess it kinda evens out. |
Property has went way down here this last year. It is sad because when the market was booming everyone bought now they can't sell because of the dropping prices. I watch that show on HGTV and some states are alot higher than Calif,it's just not here really. |
I was truly embarassed to tell my family back East what my home here cost. They cannot wrap their mind around it. There is some relativity to it in that wages are higher than some states, but had I not lived here for 25 years and was just moving here the sticker shock of homes here would be too overwhelming:eek: |

I'm way outside of Chicago and it's bad here too and I don't feel that salaries are keeping up. My parents bought a new house 20 years ago for $130000 and it's worth $280000 or more now. But salaries haven't doubled in 20 years! We are in a "cheap" townhouse that costs more than single family houses in other areas. If we want to move up to a single family we are talking $300,000. That's insane. It only gets worse as you head toward Chicago. We are ready to move away. They just aren't building "starter" homes here and everyone was so used to properties going up up up they are being greedy and asking too much for crappy houses that need a ton of work just because they are in a certain area. Also, people can afford these houses by having 2 parents working. There is no option for one parent to stay home or you just can't live here... |
I pay more for my 500 sq. ft., 1 bedroom apartment than my cousin pays for her brand new 1700 sq. ft. house on 1/2 an acre in Tennessee. It makes me sick that I could buy a house in Tennessee right now. And living here in California, the thought of buying a home is sooooo far away! Our income is about the same, but she has a master's degree, and I have a high school diploma, so.... :p |
