USPS postage stamps increase On May 12, the price of stamps in the US will go up a penny. Beginning May 12, consumers will pay 42 cents to mail a letter first-class. The last time postage rates were raised was in May 2007, when first-class stamps jumped 2 cents to the current 41-cent rate. http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_...00010000000001 Now is the time for all good people to go get the FOREVER stamp at 41¢. And if you are still using 39¢ stamps and adding 2¢ stamps, you will need to get 1¢ stamps to get to the new 42¢ price. Under the new law, postal prices will be adjusted annually each May, the Postal Service said. Officials said they plan to give 90 days notice of future changes, twice what is required by law. While the charge for the first ounce of a first-class letter rises to 42 cents, the price of each added ounce will remain 17 cents, so a two-ounce letter will go up a penny to 59 cents. The cost to mail a post card will also go up a penny, to 27 cents Other increases set for May 12: Large envelope, 2 ounces, $1, up 3 cents. Money Orders up to $500, $1.05, unchanged. Certified mail, $2.70, up 5 cents. First-class international letter to Canada or Mexico, 72 cents, up 3 cents. Changes in the price for Priority Mail and Express Mail will be announced later, the agency said. |
Are you kidding me? They JUST went up, not even a year ago!!! |
Mercy! But believe you me...people will still be using the postal service to mail their items. |
I have a few of the forever stamps but still can't believe they're raising it AGAIN - I think when our country raises all our basic needs - food - gas - utilities and postage WE Should get pay increases to compensate - the average person is just getting slammed now with the high prices of everything:thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown |
I have started paying my bills online to save the cost of postage....I really hate to do this due to security issues but I also hate having to spend $20.00 a month mailing bills that are already outrageous... We also found out yesterday that our gas and electric is going to go up again...for the second time this winter...boy oh boy...how is a person suppose to get ahead in times like this.... |
darn.....this stinks really bad. I don't have to mail my wedding invites until the end of May. If only the forever stamps came in a wedding design! Then I would be all set. |
Yea I was talking to Des and she told me this!!! This is CRAZY!!! :thumbdown :thumbdown |

Neat way for the USPS to get money up front. My luck I'd buy a bunch and then forget where I put them. |
I use probably 2 stamps a year, as I noticed years ago, the more the stamps went up , the crappier service seemed to be(took mom 3 years to get a get well card)..I pay all my bills online, and even do the paperless statements..I had a late fee years ago on the water bill, I mailed it from town 2 weeks early..after the water co. charged the late fee and finally got the check, I told them to check the date on it to see I mailed it when I said..I was correct, but, it didn't matter, because it was late, they still charged me..good old US postal service |
  I can't believe they are going up once again...grrrr Quote:

I don't remember stamps going up till here lately. In a few years it's going to really start hurting the piggy bank if they keep this up. I think they should pass a law stating they can only raise it so much in such time. Once a year is crazy! |
WHAT???!!! I thought that they said there wouldn't be another increase for awhile...that was what...not even a year ago. The FOREVER stamp is still suppose to be around though, right? I thought the whole purpose of that was because if the stamps increased again, we wouldn't have to pay for it because of the forever stamps???!! CRAZY!!!! What is up with that?! I guess they are keeping up w/ everything else....since everything else we NEED keeps going up!!! :thumbs_do |
The problem is gas prices keep going up. It is costing the US Postal service more to ship your mail because of gas prices. Same as everything else (food, utility, etc.). As long as gas prices keep increasing expect the cost of everything to keep increasing. I wish there was a way for them to keep gas prices from increasing:rolleyes: Would make all of us happy:) |
to me, stamps may as well be extinct..Doesn't everyone here mostly pay their bills online anymore? I thought my dh was the only one that still used stamps..I've been trying to get him to stop using them..I hate sending anything out through the mail, never know when(or if) it will even get to its destiny |

It does not show a price on it like the commemorative stamps do. Looks as if I should buy some more. I use USPS to send presents and cards. Also to keep in touch with people who ::GASP:: do not have a computer or Internet access. |
That is the FOREVER stamp and it is said to be able to be used no matter how high the cost of a stamp increases! I love sending things thru the mail...cards, packages, gifts, etc...and I still pay almost all of my bills thru the mail.... |

For some reason...I just like the post office...I love getting things in the mail and I know my elderly friends and family love it too. There is just something about getting a little gift or card in the mail. I also like NOT doing any banking stuff online...I worry more about that can happen going that route than using the in person "slow" way. But that is just me! |
stamp collecting -- a dying hobby, thanks to USPS 4 Attachment(s) Quote:
I like getting cards and things in the mail. I do use the internet to pay bills, it is easier. And a lot of my bills are automatically paid by my bank, or charged directly to my credit card, which I pay online. The FOREVER Stamp will be good for whenever you use it, it will count as whatever the current postage is. You do not have to add additional postage. That was the incentive for people and businesses to buy up lots of it. But I still have 39¢ stamps left over and a bunch of 2¢ stamps so now I need 1¢ stamps unless I use them all up by May 12. And I foresee another raise of probably 1¢ in 2009, and so on. And I also love receiving postcards. I used to be a deltiologist and even went to post card conventions before we had the children. I used to be a philatelist before the cost of buying plate blocks and mint sheets became prohibitive. I like commemorative stamps, they teach you a lot of things and they are like miniature lithographs. Remember the stamps commemorating American Composers, Muppets, Elvis Presley, Teddy Bear (see below) Walt Disney series? The 50 state stamps, Tweety Bird and Sylvester? I liked seeing those. Sorry this is so long. I really was passionate about the cute little stamps. |
ooooooohhhhhh! I remember the Teddy Bear stamps, they were so cute. Were there ever any Yorkie stamps from the US? I would have gotten those to use. |
