Graphic Design schools I know we have some graphic designers on here. I have my bachelors degree in PR, but I really want to do something in graphic design (I'm a photoshop addict!) Does anyone know of any good online design schools? I've been looking at Sessions Academy of Art The Academy of Art looks like a great school, but fairly expensive considering I have tens of thousands of dollars in school loans from my undergraduate degree. Does anyone have any opinions or suggestions? Also, on a discussion board, someone discouraged someone else from getting their GD degree because there are a lot more graphic designers than jobs. Is this true? I would hate to spend even more money and not get a job! Help!! |
My husband graduated from School of Visual Arts, but for film. He told me that their graphic arts program is excellent. |
http://colum.edu/ (chicago) No one I know personally who has a degree in graphic design has a job in their field. I hate to be negative, but that's the market in Chicago anyway. |
Keep the faith. I know a ton of people in NYC who have jobs in graphics. There is so much to do, there is print, there is TV, there is advertising. There are agencies in New York just for graphics people looking for work. I know of a huge magazine publisher that hires temps at certain publication times and they are making bank. Even the big banks here hire graphics people to do all of their manuals and corporate communications stuff. You can easily pay the rent doing it here while pursuing something more creative on your own. |
I used to live in Rhode Island... and RISD was a well known school ..Rhode Island School of Design...you may want to look on their site. |
A graphics person at the Village Voice gave me this info a few years ago. He said this place will give you more info about the programs than any degree program. Check it out: http://nobledesktop.com/index.html |
Its partially true about the graphic design market being saturated.. the thing is.. its not regulated.. for instance, to be a doctor, you have to have a degree proving your a doctor or it is illegal to practice medicine... to be a graphic designer you don't have to have a degree, so every joe schmoe is getting in to it. i'm a graphic designer, absolutely love what i do. i was searching the market like crazy when i graduated, and found that some places are extremely saturated, for instance NYC and Dallas... too many designers... but where i live, Phoenix, tons of graphic design jobs! basically it depends on where your looking into getting a job.. and just like any other profession, if your good at what you do, you will succeed wether or not the market is saturated. good luck! |
Thanks guys! I'm going to look into everyone's suggestions. I figure I can do some graphic design on the side for a while if there aren't any jobs right away. I appreciate your honesty and encouragment!! |
