I'm Back... Well, we drove home last night to beat the winter storm. My grandma is still in Intensive Care on the Ventilator. She has a major tumor (Cancer) on her intestines. They are running tests to find out what kind of cancer, if it has spread, etc... today. She was knocked out by the drugs they gave her to stay asleep, and has had a hard time waking up, but this morning my dad called to say that she was awake and following commands. The Neurologist said that all indications that she is functioning normally (no stroke) are very good. My Grandma's religion is Christian Science, and that means that she believes in healing herself, not in doctors, hospitals, medicine, etc... but we are hoping that she will choose to have the surgery and get the tumor removed. The tumor has been there for a long time (years) and has been slowly sucking the blood from her body, and recently it got so big that is taking more blood than she can produce. That is why she got so sick. Plus, with the low blood count, it allowed her to get pneumonia and a blood infection. The congestive heart failure was because when the gave her blood transfusions they pushed them too fast- they gave her meds to loose the excess water retention and that is working... She is still very sick, and unfortunately when I left yesterday, she was not awake. When my dad told her that we left last night, and had been with her all weekend, she started crying. I am driving back up Friday to spend the weekend with her. I keep repeating "God will not give me more than I can handle" because my daughter got sick yesterday morning, and we had to drive home with her sick- woke up this morning and my sister-in-law was taken to the ER because she thought her water broke and was having contractions (she is 2 1/2 hrs away). She is not due until April 1..... I am a week behind in my college classes- I missed 2 exams this weekend... "God will not give me more than I can handle. God will not give me more than I can handle... God will not give me more than I can handle...." p.s. Thank you everyone who took time out to pray for my grandma and send well wishes. It is comforting to know that I can turn to you when I need a boost! |

I am praying for you and your family. I am sorry you are going through this! |
I always say that God gave Drs the wisdom to do the work they do..I know a girl in my hometown in Illinois who died because her parents were of that faith, and she bled to death...Prayers are coming for your Grandma... |
I have a ~sort of~ funny story to tell from this weekend. The entire family was sitting in the cafeteria at the hospital, and my dad was telling a funny story about my grandma- he stood up to demonstrate something, and collapsed on the floor- he was rolling around in pain- I had no idea what was going on. I told my brother to run and find someone to help us. In the mean time, I push the table away, and tell my dad to just hold still, we are getting someone to help him. He rolls over on his hands and knees and I see that his foot is pointed in the wrong direction- sort of pointing back up at his face.... and there is a giant "bump" sticking out of the side of his foot. He looks up at me, and says, it is ok, he is in a lot of pain, but it is just his ankle. It is dislocated and if he can get his muscles to relax, it will go right back into place... I am shaking so bad that I can hardly stand..... a few minutes later, and he is back to normal. No pain, nothing. A security guard runs into the cafeteria and asks the worker what is going on... he comes over and dad tells him that is ok, it happens a lot, and doesn't need any help. A minute later, and an ER Nurse and the Nurse supervisor comes in and wants to know what is going on.... My dad told them, and they were a little skeptical that he didn't need to be looked at by a dr. So, my dad gets up and starts doing a little jig.... they could not believe that it was not hurting, swelling, nothing... He tells them that he is a nurse and knows that he is ok. They left, but we sure had a laugh at the looks on their faces when he got up and started dancing! |

My grandma does not push her faith on others, my grandpa was in and out of hospitals all of his adult life, and it was my grandma that drove him and was by his side every time. My dad and aunt also saw a doctor regularly, because they did not practice her religion. I respect her faith and her decisions, but at this point, she is too sick to do the work needed to heal herself. She now has to have faith that her kids (my dad and aunt) who are both nurses by the way- made the right decision to take her to the hospital and seek treatment. She would have died otherwise. The doctors said she would have died within 24 hrs if she had not sought medical treatment. She had a 104 temp. when she went into the ER and was not coherent... her blood count was deathly low.... I thank God that she was found in time, as she lives alone. |
Still praying for your Grandmother AND for you. |
OH NO  You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers! :love-hug1 |
My thoughts are with you and your family... Prayers for your grandmother to get better. *Hugs* |

Personally I am a big believer in modern medicine. Years ago if someone lived to be 60 it was a big deal. That was why Social Security benefits did not begin until age 65. Now people are living longer due to modern medicine and life style changes, so the retirement age for Social Security is getting higher and higher. Not to be offensive, but perhaps this could have been avoided if it had been detected sooner? Regardless, I am sending prayers out for her sucessful recovery. Grandmas are so special. |
